    fuel gauge

Bemm, your new sender possibly has a feed,an earth(where the old ones earthed through the screws and a low fuel light terminal),Which terminal is which I cannot tell you atm.Could have done with the low fuel light today.Ran out of fuel in the empty tank, gauge showing full,200mtrs from servo.Blonde moment....Now have 2 full tanks and nowhere too travel.

    Hi Bemm
I am just on the very same - series 2a neg earth.
I have figured that the 3 terminal one - the centre goes to the gauge and the one outside is earth. If it’s the same as mine it is plastic and therefore needs an earth.
The single terminal is metal so no earth required. The problem is that it presumes the tank is well earthed, so I would add an earth wire to the unit to be sure.
I have just faced the empty showing full and the full empty. I now need to bend the wire accordingly- let’s see how that goes.

I posted this on the Pomie Series 2 forum and got the same answer as previous post
    one terminal earth
    one terminal gauge
one terminal low fuel warning light
However they also said the sender I pictured needs a voltage stabiliser to cynic with gauge correctly and the gauge needs a flat needle rather than the pointy one
Im interested in your progress with this, I’m kinda stockpiling information and bits for soon not quiet at that stage yet (2a positive earth)

    Further clarity to the above.

Fuel gauges and senders changed with the change to negative earth with 2a chassis suffix 'c' in 1967. The two types are not interchangeable and the gauge/sender cannot be mixed. The later negative earth type needs an external voltage regulator.

Plastic body senders will need a separate terminal for an earth wire.

Diesel senders have an extra terminal for a fuel warning light, but are otherwise identical to the petrol one.

I wonder what the logic is there ? i.e. why not for petrol too ???

The logic was that if you run out of fuel in a petrol one, you simply refill it from your jerrican, whereas a diesel you have to bleed after running out of fuel.

I had never seen a low fuel light in a car before my father got a Simca Vedette in 1959, but this was very much an isolated instance. The first car I have owned with one was my first diesel Landrover, and for years this and my father's car were the only ones I had ever seen. They did not become common in petrol vehicles until long after Series production ended, but have always been common on diesels, at least since WW2.

I have been reading this with interest - having the same problem.
When I sorted the tank I removed the sender which was really looked very corroded and bad.
I ordered a cheapie from the UK as part of one of my orders ages ago. When I installed it last month it read backwards. I phoned a local supplier and ordered a better one thinking that was the problem. No better.
Getting frustrated I cleaned up the old one with a wire wheel and contact spray and it works like a charm!
There has to a moral on that story!

I would guess you have a pre-1967 system, and most, if not all, of the senders available today are aimed at Series 3 and post 1967 Series 2a.
