Smiths round heater - where to mount controls ?

    Hi All,

I have a a round smiths heater, that I intend to install in my 2a, but I'm not sure where the control for the water valve should go.

Is there a standard place for the control, push/pull cable a bit like the choke I guess ???

Likewise for the fan, I presume an on/off switch goes somewhere ? Any clues where the standard location for that is too ?

    Thanks
    John

    John,
As it was an accessory I'm not sure there was a 'standard position'.
Maybe google pictures of UK Series IIa's with Smiths heaters fitted.

There is a cable operated heater valve that was fitted in the UK (not sure when this was introduced) the Series III in Australia had a different valve (fitted to Fords in a slightly different configuration). Typically in the Series II/IIa era it would probably have been a manual valve on the block.

yes the ones I've seen have had a manual valve in the engine bay and just an 'on/off' fan switch on the dash panel marked "Heater".

The standard water valve was a screw down valve on the heater water outlet on the head. According to my optional equipment parts catalogue (RTC 9842CE, 1988) this was the only water control ever offered for Series 1,2,2a.

There may well have been other options offered by third party suppliers. My experience is that this works quite well - just turn it off in summer - it does not spread a lot of heat without the fan on.

Wow, open the bonnet to adjust the temperature !!

Yeah maybe the fan on/off will be enough.

    Thanks for the replies.

    Cheers,

    G'day All,
Attached is photo of the cylinder head heater tap on my 1966 2A 4 cylinder. I machined up a new handle to make it easier of open/shut. You open the tap before you start the engine! (Didn't have Delrin to make one that you can open when the engine is hot.)
The heater hoses are made out of cut down molded hoses from other vehicles.

This is the UK valve, cable operated.

Readily available from the usual UK suppliers.

My Series I has a home made heater, the valve on the block doesn't have a handle (probably vibrated off and lost years ago).
There isn't enough heat generated to be a problem in the warmer months.......

    G'day John,

Gee that was 45 years ago. It's a genuine tap 3/8 BSP. It has a packing gland for the spindle. As Colin said UK may have a similar one available however maybe you can pick one up from local suppliers. Be careful to confirm your thread in the cylinder head and the possible supplied thread. There are parts that don't fit these days that are generic with different threads.

Not much can go wrong with them so maybe a used one with a packing gland that can be repacked. (I note the modern replacements maybe use an O ring to seal the spindle like house water taps.)
