Hi John,
You usually buy a sender to match up to the guage. It will depend on what your guage is and what range of pressures it reads to match the correct sender to it.
What is your guage ? What model defender ?

HI All,
I am looking at replacing my oil pressure guage sender, I can buy either Smiths 0 - 60psi or 0 - 100psi senders.
What's the most appropriate for my s2a 2.25 petrol engine ? I understand oil pressure should not be more than 40psi anyway.
Any thoughts/comments/suggestions please ?
Thanks
John

Well, if it is a 2a 2.25 it is not a Defender, but the point is good - these did not have an oil pressure gauge as standard, so you need to get one to match the particular gauge.
On the other hand, if you mean what sender/gauge combination you should fit, the answer is 0-100psi, as the specified pressure range is 45-65 according to my workshop manual or 55-65psi in my owners manual. Having said that, mine runs at 40psi and always has. And this pressure is specified as "engine warm", at 2000rpm (or 30mph, top gear in the owners manual); pressure will be higher when the oil is cold.

Thanks.
I did have a 100psi guage, but it was in bad shape, so I obtained a good second hand 60psi. I'll have to look at the sender, but I would guess it's a 100psi, so I had better by a new one of those.
Cheers,
John
