    Diff questions/help please

    Hi,

I have two rear differentials (from two series 1s, both 1957 but parts from many sources). One has six-lobed centres, and the other just has flat 'dish' centres.

What's the difference between these hubs, and can you tell me anything about them?

Here are some numbers I found on each:

    Diff 1:
    Hub: Flat 'dish' centre
On left side, out near hub: 111713163
On bevel pinion housing, small plate: 2557
On rim of bevel pinion housing: 5669 T5T57 O
On face of bevel pinion housing: ROVER 219636

    Diff 2:
    Hub:
On left side, out near hub: not legible
On bevel pinion housing, small plate: absent
On rim of bevel pinion housing: not legible
On face of bevel pinion housing: ROVER 219636

    And here are some images:
    Diff 1 end.jpgDiff 1.jpgNumber on diff 1.jpg

    Diff 2 end.jpgDiff 2.jpg

I found the similar part number 219635 in a parts catalogue, so I'm assuming that just means they have the same bevel pinion housing... I'm also assuming the 111713163 number means it's a 1957 diff.

Are they interchangeable? Can I put the 6-lobed hubs onto diff 1?

    Thanks in advance!

The one with the 'dished' end is a semi-floating axle. The dished end and the drive shaft are a single forging.

The other one is a fully floating axle where the outside end of the drive shaft locates via splines in a drive member (the 6 lobed bit).

The semi floating axle has a collar that is pressed in place to hold everything together (a diagram would be handy......) so to swap over you'd have to change the brake backplate, hub & driveshaft as well. The collar needs something like 20tonnes pressure to remove/refit from the semi floating axle. I've attached a picture when I refitted a collar.

I understand that the fully floating Series I axle is quite rare as it was only used for maybe one year.

Why do you want to swap bits over ?

    Thanks, that was really helpful.

I was thinking of swapping because I thought the fully floating axle might be easier to service - not requiring the 20-ton press. Also the car I'm restoring had the fully floating axle when I got it. Have just ended up with this semi-floating axle too (which has a diff housing in better condition)...
