Universal Joint for front driveshafts Series II & III

I'm about to replace a universal joint in a front driveshaft and have had concerns with some UJ's that if you remove the seals the needle rollers can move backwards & forwards. Some designs seem to use the seals to physically locate the needle rollers in the caps.

Because the driveshaft runs in oil, leaving the seals in place shouldn't be a problem but there is no need for them and removing them will let oil get in more easily.

I've found a UJ that has a step in the shaft so that when the seals are removed the needle rollers cannot move so they stay in the cap where they are meant to be. In the picture the cap on the RHS has been pulled partly off and you can see the step.

Update : Part number was wrong

I had it in my mind that Series II & III propshaft and driveshaft UJ were the same size but I was wrong (maybe it Series I has propshaft and driveshaft UJ's the same size)
Toyo K5-13XR fits the propshaft on Series II & III and has a step, just need to sort out a Toyo equivalent to the one for the driveshaft.

when you say front drive shafts, you mean half-shafts. I also use Toyo K5-13XR , sold as a Falcon Uni Joint .

Interestingly I put a '06 BA Falcon diff in my '49 Dodge and both the Dodge and Falcon also use the same Uni joint , I needed a new slip joint in the shaft so had the tail shaft professionally reconditioned & balanced the invoice said " 2x LandRover K5-13XR " uni joints .

OK, you got me on a technicality.....

Turns out that the part number I listed was for the later propshaft UJ.

Checking my old Four Wheel Drives catalogue it highlights that the propshaft UJ changed in the 1960's. 2-15/16" across the outside up to about 1962 and 3-7/32" after that date. The half-shaft UJ must have remained at the smaller 2-15/16"
The Toyo K5-13XR UJ is the larger size for propshafts after 1962

I'll have to track down a Toyo part number for the smaller UJ and hope they have the step as well !

I found that I had a couple 'in stock' but they are 'Koyo' brand with no part number as they were supplied just in a packet, no box. They don't have the step to retain the needle rollers.

The one I just removed had grooves worn in it so it needs replacing.

    Found it.
    Half-shaft K5GB35 (probably without seals)
    Propshaft K5L4R
Both seem a lot more expensive than the larger K5-13XR

    Hello from Brisbane.

Yes, the driveshaft and halfshaft uni joints are different as you suggest.

    How do I know?

I ordered a set of half shaft unis from a crowd in Cyprus when I bought a set of NOS swivel balls from them. The uni joints were too big, but the seals had been removed and discarded - bin jobs.

    Cheers,

    Neil
