Personally the Series II.
To be fair pros & cons with both, could depend if it's to end up as a daily driver.

So, firstly I must apologise for my somewhat ‘kook-ish’ posts thus far. But, there’s only so far I can get by just pouring through the Rover manuals; first-hand experience is a wonderful thing! So I guess I’m hoping to try to gather a little ‘vicarious first-hand experience’
So, hypothetically, if one had the option between a late (1970 I think) 2a, SWB diesel (with a strange PTO winch of some sort), and a series 3 SWB petrol - for the same price, which would you gravitate towards?
They both seem to be in pretty similar knick, although the series 3 is pretty dusty.
Any input would be greatly appreciated!

Yeah, okay. If it was going to be used more regularly, how would that change things? (And which engine would be your pick for a daily driver? Diesel or petrol? Or either or?)
SHH! We don’t need encouragement.................
What would play into this decision for you?
Thanks heaps!

So I guess the diesel would be slower, but the PTO could be useful.
I would go the Series 3 (I used to have one ) petrol so more zoom zoom, better gearbox for everyday use and a bit better dash.

I don't have experience with the LR Diesel but I have a Series III with a 2.4 N/A Isuzu fitted and it keeps up with the traffic no problem.
Series III plus points are full synchro box and anti-burst door locks.
Series IIa more sought after (more so with the lights in the grille), I prefer the Series II instrument panel, the winch might be handy
If you can double de-clutch the IIa will be OK in traffic but you could always fit a Series III full synchro box if it was a problem.
From the outside they are almost identical so it comes down to the engine choice more than anything.
