Dunlop SP Qualifier TG21 (stock Landcruiser tyre) - Any Experience?
Thought I'd post this in the Series Land Rover forum; I figure that anyone running 7.50R16 tyres are more than likely driving a Series Rover.
I am considering the Dunlop SP Qualifier TG21 as replacements for the ageing 7.50R16 Olympic Steeltreks on my Perentie. From what I can gather they were one of the two 7.50R16 tyres fitted as standard to Australian-delivery base model Landcruiser utility and troop carriers from at least 1990 through to 2007, with the other tyre being the Dunlop SP Road Gripper.
I've done some internet searching for reviews, but surprisingly given the number of vehicles likely run with these tyres, I've found pretty much zero information on their performance.
They are an 8-ply light truck tyre, seemingly pretty robust with a load rating of 114 for single-axle fitment and a speed rating of S (140km/h). Admittedly their tread form is not particularly aggressive - probably no good at all in mud - but for bitumen, sand and gravel (which would be my world) I think they would perform OK. They also have the circumferential side ribs just above the tread blocks to supposedly offer some protection to the sidewall (just like the old-school Steeltreks). They are likely not brilliant in terms of wet-road handling, but the Perentie has full-time drive to all wheels, and I drive very conservatively when the road is evenly remotely wet.
Just wondering if anyone has any experience with these tyres. I've been quoted $189 brand new which I think is comparatively pretty good for a robust light truck tyre in 7.50R16. For reference pricing on new Dunlop SP Road Gripper in 7.50R16 size is about $260 a tyre.
Sorry, don't have any info on the Qualifiers, but regarding the Road Grippers, you should be able to get them a lot cheaper than quoted as they are now what's supplied on Troopy's etc. Albeit in a 225/95 size, so a little taller than the 7.50x16
With Toyota's recent-ish changeover to 225/95/16 in the SP Road Gripper as the standard tyre size for their base model Cruisers there are indeed some take-offs of Road Grippers showing up on Ebay and Gumtree, but as you say all in the taller 225/95/16 size. As 225/95/16 has superseded 7.50R16 there are less of the 7.50's showing up now.
I don't dislike the 225/95/16 size at all; however they are universally a tubeless tyre, and for a tyre to go on the tube-type Perentie rims - with tubes - I'd rather stick to a tube-type (TT) tyre, hence the 7.50R16 TT tyre.
