    Post Series Door reskin or reframe

    I know there's a lot of posts around the forum for reskinning series doors, but I can't find anything relating to 'reframing' Series doors.

    Both near and off side door frames (tops and bottoms) are a pretty rusty, and need repairing or replacing but the old skins are in fine condition and cosmetically suit the car. I'm hoping to be able to strip the original skins from the frames, repair & galvanise the frames before refitting the original skins.

    Has anybody had any success (or failures) doing this, any advice would be greatly appreciated.

    My main areas of concern are:
    1. The seams cracking during the lifting and re bending of the hem around the outside - can the Aluinium be annealed first without destroying the paint?
    2. Is there adhesive between the steel frame and Alu skin that won't let the skin come off without destroying it?

    I'll be taking plenty of pictures during the attepmted process and will try to update with the progress.

    I've removed several door skins to repair frames then re-fitted the skins.
    There is some sealant but it's usually hardened and cracks, never had an issue de-skinning.
    You need to bend back the aluminium as little as possible, I've not annealed before re- fitting.

    Closing the seam again doesn't always look as neat as factory, I used a sandbag & panel beating hammer.
    There are seam closing tools but I'm not sure how readily available they are, some are like pliers with a soft jaw and there are rotary ones as well.

    I'll look for some pictures when I get home.

    I could only find one picture of the skin removed.
    This was re-fitted and is on the vehicle now.

    There were some in this thread I think but got removed when Photobucket held everyone to ransom Isuzu C240 powered Series 3

    Nice to know others have gone before me.

    Looks like you did a nice job of opening the hem and stripping the skin off without damaging them.

    Any chance you know of a decent source of repair panels for the frames? It's the top section that's totally shot, the rest of the frame is surprisingly solid.

    Tim,
    Repair sections for the main frame are readily available from most of the usual suspects, I've imported from the UK in the past. I've not seen top sections advertised.
    There is Chazza who used to frequent the forum.
    He makes a better quality repair section plus he might be able to help with the top section.

    Charlie Is out of action for a month or so.
    Working on Fire protection of his Home in Western AUS.

    This sort of relates to the purpose of this forum.
    Following the bushfire yesterday, Feb 7th, just to the east of Narrogin, I have now realised what I have known for 32 years; that my house and sheds built in 1937 will go up like a bomb, with all of the Land Rovers as well, if a fire gets close enough.
    Consequently, as of today, I must cease production of parts for some of you and concentrate on stopping up all of the gaps, with metal fly-wire, to prevent ember ingress into the sheds and house.
    I haven't forgotten you, my customers – the door skins are half completed – but I hope you will understand that this summer especially, life and security have taken priority. I will be back in metal working action some time in mid-March.

    new doors are readily avalible at reasonable prices,they still need the skins removed , properly welded up and galved, down side is the skins are soft, the originals have a nice hardness to them, if only the bottoms that are rusty a new piece is easily folded up and welded in, i get them made thicker and dont have the flat panel welded on
