LR Series IIA and III maintenance cost

    Hi all,

I'm looking at getting a series landy and whilst the initial cost of the thing doesn't scare me, the maintenance, rego and insurance does a wee bit. I'm a 20 year old living in Brisbane who studies and works (so I don't have an infinite amount of time on my hands). I would be doing most of the maintenance myself except for more difficult things like an engine recondition or gearbox replacement. I'm currently looking at getting a diesel as they're more fuel efficient and from what i've heard easier to maintain. I'm aware that the condition of the vehicle matters too, I'm look for one thats in good condition (ie, mechanically sound but not a collectors item). I'm curious on much does it cost annually to look after a series, including maintenance, rego, insurance and fuel? Alternatively, would it be more worth my time to wait till the car market is down and seeing if perenties drop in price?

Taking your last point - I can't see a substantial drop in Perentie prices.

If you do the work on a Series 2a/3 yourself, maintenance is not particularly high, as they are simple to work on and most parts are relatively cheap and readily available. If you do a lot of mileage, you need to bear in mind that service intervals are small compared to modern vehicles, so you end up paying for a lot of oil and filters.

And, if it is in good condition to start with, they are not troublesome. However, you need to bear in mind that they are at least forty years old, and you can expect to be paying to replace bits that have been bodged up or neglected over this time, which is repairs not maintenance. And this will very much depend on what condition it was in when you get it.

Registration depends on whether it is full or club registration, and depends on your state - check with your local authority. Insurance is even more variable - depends on where you live, your age, driving history, whether you have another car, etc etc.

However, it is a reasonable guess that provided it is looked after, the depreciation will be negative - they are rising in value, and this is unlikely to change. Since depreciation is the biggest cost of ownership for most vehicles, this puts you ahead.

On the other hand, you are unlikely to find one that does not need work, and this can easily turn into a full restoration. Depending on its condition when you start, and how picky you are, this can get quite expensive. And a lot of work.

My 2a has been a working vehicle for me for about thirty years (although not high mileage), and the biggest repair expenses have been a clutch and a head gasket. I have replaced the carburetor and the fuel pump, but these were not strictly necessary. Apart from these the biggest expenses have been tyres and a repaint, plus buying several others to ensure parts are on hand, and, for example to convert it to a cab/ute from a soft top. And it is now worth roughly double what I paid for it in 1990!
