    Hardura sound deadening

In an effort to tidy up my Series IIa Dormobile I'm looking at replacing the Hardura 'sound deadening'
I know it's not as good as modern materials but want the vehicle to look original.
My Hardura has been damaged, there are holes cut in it and it's been rotting from the bottom edge in a few places.

I found a local supplier of Hardura at approx $130 per metre then I have to cut, sew & edge bind. Edge binding material is approx $5 per metre.
Exmoor make a kit which you can buy through Paddocks (or other UK suppliers), cost approx $290 plus shipping & GST
A local supplier has the kit on offer at $399 plus $55 freight.

Does anyone have experience of the kits ? Do they fit well ??

    Colin,

Hello from Brisbane - I sent a PM about the kits - here’s some general experience with the ExMoor kits.

Firstly, there is a definite landed price difference between ordering direct from the UK and through the local agent. However, that’s largely academic because from my attempts to import a set from the manufacturers the outcome was fairly negative. Basically, ExMoor won’t sell direct to Australian customers - or at least they wouldn’t when I tried - but insist that you order through their local agent. This wasn’t always the case but was when I was last dealing with them.

Anyway I did go through the agent but the experience was definitely underwhelming - I won’t elaborate on that other than to highlight the fact that ExMoor has become difficult to deal directly with and working through the local agent was not something that I’m going to applaud any time too soon.

To be honest my gripes about dealing with ExMoor doesn’t start or end there. A few years back I imported a set of ExMoor‘s seat backs and cushions and these were upholstered in a plain light grey vinyl fabric. A little while back I tried to order a pair of matching door trims but was told after several unsuccessful attempts to communicate through their posted address that these are not available. Rather I would have to accept Elephant Hide Grey or black - ExMoor never having made Series seats in plain grey. That was news to me because my grey seat set clearly identifies them as ExMoor - a point that I unsuccessfully raised with company.

Gripes over - the ExMoor hardura kits are OK but the process of acquiring one isn’t so good. Plus the can of aerosol glue that supposedly accompanies each kit was missing - another small niggle.

    Cheers,

    Neil

    Thanks Neil,
Looks like you can buy the kits via Paddocks (or any of the usual UK suspects) so probably a better option than the local agent, possibly cheaper as well. I did see a note about long delivery times though.

I sourced my Dormobile elephant hide seat covers direct from them, one day I'll get round to fitting them !

Had a look at a rotten piece from the Dormobile and it has the Vinyl on both sides whereas the sample material I looked at was just one side with a Jute backing.

Seems that the Dormoble had it round the footwells & over the transmission tunnel but not on the seatbox (no evidence of glue), also nothing around where the pedals come through the bulkhead but there was in the same position on the passenger side.

Shipping a couple of metres from the UK is is likely to be expensive due to the weight so I'm still undecided. I probably need to make some templates at some point and see how little I can get away with.

    Colin,

    Hello again.

That’s effectively what the ExMoor kit is constructed of - shiny black outer and jute like backing. The section of the firewall panel that reaches the floor tunnel and the front of the tunnel cover have some edging down around them but the rest are not - so, I’m not sure how neat a finish will be achieved along the edges where two un-edged panels join. This is mainly around the sides and upper panels of the footwells.

The fitting instructions that come with the kit are fairly minimalist and don’t say much other than what should be in the kit - that’s how I figured that the aerosol can of adhesive was missing. It does seem to suggest that all of the panels other than the one covering the floor tunnel should have adhesive across the whole surface - the tunnel cover just around the edges presumably to allow easy removal of the cover and floor.

I’m still thinking over the best adhesive to use.

    Cheers,

    Neil

    Hi Colin

This is the stuff that I've fitted to my Lightweight (and Defender).
It's a mass loaded vinyl with a surface finish that looks a bit like hardura.
You can get it with and without the foam on the back.
I got it from a place in Dandenong, I'll see if I can dig out the details if you want?

    Thanks Dan,

I work in Dandy so can check it out if you find the details.
It wasn't TruFit was it ? I happen to deal with them and the owner put me onto the Hardura supplier.

No, wasn't TruFit. From memory it was Pyrotek on South Link.
The textured vinyl stuff is called wavebar, I think, and is available with different types of foam backings, or none!

Eventually got round to visiting them.
1.2mm Wavebar looks the goods but.....they will only sell in 10mtr rolls at about $35 per metre !
    Thanks anyway Dan.

I have 2 Hardura samples from old Land Rovers, both are different to what you can currently buy.

One has the jute backing covered in a black substance.
The other has the PVC surface on both sides.

I guess a Land Rover it will let water in plus they will be washed out with a hose. The jute backing will store water and rot the footwell/bulkhead out quickly.
Land Rover would have had it made to order and the backing was 'waterproofed'.

I have another company to try, they think they have leftover Wavebar plus maybe some alternatives. I'm taking my two old samples with me.

Otherwise it's buy the current Hardura and consider treating the backing with something like underseal or some other rubber compound after paying $130 per metre !

    Colin,

    Hello again from Brisbane.

I had been meaning to check Pirotek’s local outlet for Wavebar but given your findings down south I probably don’t need to bother. I don’t need that sort of length.

I’m thinking of lining the inner bulkhead of my 88” truck’s tub with something like hardura given that it is a bit knocked around and the rest of the interior will be fitted with an ExMoor kit. If you go ahead and have surplus of about that dimension on your order I might take it off your hands.

    Cheers,

    Neil

Managed to get some offcuts of textured vinyl (not sure it will do much in the way of sound deadening).
Ideal for everything except the transmission tunnel.

It will give a hard wearing, washable surface that won't hold water and look fairly original. I might have to relieve the back on tight corners, I'll see how I get on.
