    Oil

What Oil are you running in your Daily Drivers. Know all the Pros and Cons.
Gearbox, Diffs, Steering Box, Swivels, Relay.
I use Penrite Mild EP, in Everything except motor, changing Gearbox, Transfer, OD, Diffs, swivels every 5,000klms, but getting a bit hard to get from Penrite.
My Local Repco Gets it in and a good price.
    Thanks.

Don't have a Land Rover 'daily driver'.

Engine Petrol - Shell 20/50, used to be cheap at K-Mart but they don't seem to stock it now.

Engine Diesel - Shell RX Super.

Gearbox, transfer & axles - EP 75W90 GL4 from a local blender. Half the price of similar oils in Supercheap.

If you can find a local oil blender it's worth checking prices. I have to get the GL4 made to order, 20litres was about $80 last time I purchased.

    G'day All,

My daily is a 1966 Series 2a 1966 2.25 Ltr petrol SWB for 45 years with over 500,000 Miles on 3rd engine re-build. This is what I use:

Engine: Old stock Castrol GTX2 API SM/CF 20W-50 with added ZDDP to bring it back to API SJ/CE. When that is all used up will use Penrite 20W-50 Classic Mini API SJ/CE and will not have to add ZDDP. (We also drive a 1976 Mini Clubman.)

Gearbox and Transfer case: Castrol Syntrans GL4 75W-85 because I have a RoverDrive OD fitted.(Note: 75W-90 is not available in AU.)

Diffs: Redline Oil "Heavy Shock" GL5+

    Steering: Castrol EPX 85W-140 GL5.

    Swivels: Castrol EPX 85W-140 GL5.

    Relay: Castrol EPX 85W-140 GL5.

Uni Joints and ball joints.: Castrol BMX2

Coolant: Tectaloy EXTRACOOL "corrosion inhibitor only" concentrate. Replace every 2 years.

Brake Fluid: Castrol DOT3. Replace every 4 years. (Stay away from DOT4 as the additives eat out and swell up and soften the Series type rubbers.)

    Petrol: 95 with valve lube.

Have Fun Googling what these oils are as there are good reasons why this is what I ended up using.

The challenge is keeping all these fluids in a Series Land Rover and stop it from marking it's territory.

    Chris

Just read an article by Penrite where they claim 1000ppm zinc should be OK for older engines.
Seems to be quite a lot of contradicting info on the internet regarding the levels required.

Shell Helix HX3 20W50 has approx 1000ppm (from their technical desk).

I probably don't do enough Kms to worry so I'll stick with the Shell oil.

Landrover 2.25 4 cylinder and 2.5 6 cylinder engines ( and the later 200 and 300 tdi) have roller cam followers so don't need extra zinc.
Only need zinc with flat tappet engines .

Motor oil & gear oil use different SAE numbers. There's one for motor & one for gear
