    Registration & VIN Process NSW

    Hi All,

I am currently restoring a Series III SWB Petrol 1972. Another post made me think am I heading into a problem. The car was bought as is (no engine and no registration paper work) but I do have a signed document from the previous owner proving the sale.

I am planning on putting in a second hand 300TDI + new chassis. Therefore I will have new numbers for Chassis & Engine different to current plates.

Can someone point to a previous post or any information to ensure once the restoration is complete and I am ready to register I have done all the right things?

Things I am thinking about? Do I need get new plates (is this possible) ? When I am buying the engine do I only need a receipt of purchase to prove ownership?

Thanks in advance for any help,
    Chris

In NSW the identity of the vehicle is specified to be the chassis number stamped on the chassis for vehicles of that vintage (It is about the date that VINs were introduced, so it may have a VIN), but the key is still the number on the chassis - which must be the same as on the plate, if there is a compliance plate. The vehicle, if changed, for example, to a different engine, engineering approval is probably required.

The documentation required is what is referred to as a "blue slip", and it would be a good idea to find a blue slip provider who is prepared to work with you to find out what he will require. The primary aim of this document is to prove the identity of the vehicle. A receipt from the bloke who sold it to you will certainly help.

Also worth calling NSW RMS/Service NSW and talk to them about what you are planning and finding out what hurdles are in your way. But note that this is not something routine, and you are likely to have trouble finding someone to talk to who knows what they are talking about! (An informed blue slip provider who has done this sort of thing before is probably better, but the problem is finding one)

You'll need an engineer to approve the engine so find one now and talk to them before you do any actual work, you'll save yourself a lot of pain. They'll be able to advise on the chassis swap as well, because essentially you're creating a "new" vehicle.
