Digital infrared thermometers

Hi All,

Seeking info on what they can and can't do (preset to beep maybe at a certain temp), brands, accuracy, price, battery life etc.

Al the ones I have used have merely been a laser dot and digital temp display, no parameters for setting alarms etc, seem to work quite accurately though

Thermography cameras on the other hand, they're porn for any form of preventional analysis probably handy for checking the neighbours greenery too

before you buy one make sure that it's range is inside of what you want to do with it. HVAC fluke jobby is about $175-00 ish

Thermal imaging cameras, well the sky is nearly the limit with them but so to is the price - the cheapest i have found is about $8k for a relatively no brand and over $20k for a top end Fluke

Check what you are measuring as different surfaces can require a different IR setup. Also how far away you want to measure from.

The Fluke meters are in general good and robust but you need a different one to measure at 1mm - 1m than from say 1m - 10m.

As for Thermal Imaging Cameras... They can be a lot more expensive than $20,000 by at least another zero, especially the FLIR units. Real fun to use though.

I've got one of the fluke ones, great bit of kit, and seems to be quite accurate. Great for checking cooling systems, wheel bearings, gearbox temps etc.

Also great fun to play with.... how hot is the wall, ceiling, tv, window, jug, dog.....

I bought one from Altronics about three years ago and while I bought it to read temperatures on printed circuit boards while testing new gear, and it works well for this, but as TimNZ posted, they can be both fun and useful around the house for finding hot and cold drafts.

And as far as the battery goes, they don’t last too long when you the laser to keep the cat exercised

Thanks for the info so far.

Interested in temp range from 0 to 100 C, reading from less than 1 metre. Do need some indication of battery life.
