Have a good look at the teethe on the dog that replaces the gear on the gearbox mainshaft. These and the mating bity on the overdrive input shaft are likely to be badly worn, enough to make the drive uncertain. If this is the case it is not worth fitting without (expensive) repairs. 
 
Apart from this, I would just drain the oil and make sure nothing interesting except oil comes out. It is likely to be very noisy, but they can make a lot of noise and remain reliable.
