Fairey O'drive

I scored a Fairey OD on fleabay last night for $188 and am told that it "seems to be fine"!!
Should I just wack er on and see how it goes or is it worth a partial strip for a look??
Any specific problem areas I should look for??

Have a good look at the teethe on the dog that replaces the gear on the gearbox mainshaft. These and the mating bity on the overdrive input shaft are likely to be badly worn, enough to make the drive uncertain. If this is the case it is not worth fitting without (expensive) repairs.

Apart from this, I would just drain the oil and make sure nothing interesting except oil comes out. It is likely to be very noisy, but they can make a lot of noise and remain reliable.

Make sure to clean the grease out of the internal splines on the bit that replaces the gear, and have a real carefull look along the whole length of spline. It can look ok with a quick look from the outside. Same with the drive shaft.

If it looks ok, do yourself a favour, and carry the gear and coverplate w/ bearing and sufficient tools if going on a long drive. The muggers can fail at the most inconvenient of occasions!!

I'd suggest replacing the o-rings on the selector shafts as a matter of course, otherwise it'll almost certainly splash-leak while driving. It's not that serious but you can't do it once the unit is in the vehicle.
