    D3 or L322 ????

I'm looking at buying either a D3 or L322 in the not too distant future and just have the "one vehicle for nearly all occasions".

    Trouble is....which one??

Carsales searches show 40 to 50K will get you into a 2005 D3 TDV6 HSE or 2003/4 Rangie TD6 HSE. So prices are relatively similar.

Which would be the better buy, though?

Disco seems more practical, after market bits are easier to get hold of, more up to date technology.

Rangie on the other hand rides better, looks better but it's Achilies heel seems to be the gearbox. Also, snorkel is not an option.

Which would be the cheaper to maintain, insure etc etc.

Mostly the vehicle would be used for school run (2 kids), shops, some long distance driving (bitumen and unsealed) and occasional 'expeditions' and camping etc.

I feel like I've answered my own question, here, but I'd appreciate some advise

    Cheers

It will depend on how significant the occasional touring/offroad trip will be to you.

The RR is a much smoother, more refined ride. But (as you allude to), the tech is not anywhere near the later model D3's. A well maintained D3 will be a better tow and off-road vehicle, and far more economical too.

But if the RR Vogue was post 2005 however ......

    Hi gghaggis,

Thanks for the post. It doesn't seem to have attracted too many comments, though....

I've been humming and harring over which one to go for, for ages. I make my mind up and then change it again soon after!

I think the Disco would probably be the best practical all rounder, but what did you mean by a post 2005 Rangie?

    Cheers

The gearbox in the diesel Rangie is a different kettle of fish to the petrol. I can't recall any problems with the diesel gearboxes.

    Petrol: ZF
    Diesel: GM

The post 2005 L322 rangerovers had a significant upgrade hence the fairly big price difference between Model Years.
I have been told to buy the MY06 which came out in late 2005.

I was looking for one however with the GFC they went up in price!!!!! & I bought an 09 demo D3 which I am very very happy with.

    Regards

I would think the D3 as they are that bit newer and have the more modern technology.

The earlier models only had traction control on the rear axle, and had no terrain response.
