Check to ensure that it isn't the solid brass junction that sits on the body of the car just underneath the master cylinder (looks like a T piece with brake lines going into and out of it).
They are prone to leaking and the subsequent leaked fluid looks like it came from the master cylinder above.
I guess if its leaking badly enough, it could be what you have described. you will need a new or reconditioned one of these to fix it. Its not that expensive.
However, if it is the master cylinder - different story.

think i found leak! seems to be in brake line running on top of chassis almost directly below master cylinder. should be abit cheaper to fix.![]()
