Heat shield

Can anyone tell me what purpose the heat shield ( part no.587095) serves ,that's bolted to the inlet manifold on a 2 1/4 L engine and extends downwards to the starter motor? It's usually missing.

It is to stop the exhaust heat flowing back and heating the firewall and the passenger foot well and it is quite effective in doing so.
a bit hard to find in Aust now as most people took them off that chucked them away, then complained that the passenger's feet were cooking
