Who has run out of fuel in their D4?

if so how did you bleed the system?

a mate of mine got called to a D4 that had run out of fuel, he put 20L in and turn the ignition on to see if it would prime but discovered he needed to press the start button and after several attempts had no luck.

i am not sure at what stage he read the manual but apparently it mentions if you run out of fuel you need to contact a service agent i.e. no way of priming the fuel system on the side of the road

he found the fuel relay and bridged it out but this did not help priming or starting the engine

as the vehicle was on an incline he went to release the handbrake so the car could roll back onto flat ground.....problem is you cannot release the handbrake without the engine running. he did discover that if you select neutral and hit the start button you can release the handbrake only while the engine is turning over...not overly safe doing this while trying to reverse

all these wonderful electronics makes it difficult for roadside assist guys

now he did get it started which might be handy if your stuck in the middle of nowhere........very interesting method indeed

Q, if your in the middle of nowhere or in the city at 2am and run out of fuel how do you prime the fuel system?......or is it a tow truck job?

this was the second time this D4 had run out of fuel, it seems it has a faulty fuel gauge

i have browsed a couple of threads lately of guys planning big outback trips, these guys might want to get there head around this one esp if fitting additional fuel which may introduce problems

hopefully there is a simple solution.....which will at least help the roadside assist guys

Dunno if the D4 is the same, but I ran out of fuel in the D3 due to a faulty gauge.

My D3 self primed. it was in the way you turned the key and thus I don't know what you'd do in a keyless system! Glad I didn't option the keyless system on my current car.

As for releasing the handbrake, I would suggest your mate RTM!

Lastly, I was a bit embarrassed when I ran out of fuel. You see I had been noticing what wonderful economy I was suddenly getting

There's also a way of taking the car out of park.

Well, at least on the D3 there was so i assume the D4 is the same.

Yep. One of the questions I asked before driving away in my new D4 was how to get to the release cable (remove the cup holders) - its still a D3 more or less. The shift lock release tab is accessible the same way.

opps, yes my mate knew how to release as you mentioned above, i will have to check with him but i'm guessing he stumbled across the other method when trying to prime the fuel system

hopefully somebody will know of a way to prime the system without having to take it to the dealer

forgot a bit, he also located the fuel pump relay and bridged it out, the pump ran but this was not enough to prime the system

This is for the D4 2.7TD

I spoke to the mechanic this afternoon and he said the car should self prime as it has a lift pump in the tank. However prime by pressing the start button without the brake pedal depressed.

The other method is to take off the engine oil filler cap and remove the top engine cover. On top of the engine, near the rear between the tappet covers is a grey cap. If you unscrew this it reveals a standard tire schrader valve. Press the start button without depressing the brake then press in the schrader valve. Diesel and bubbles will start coming out. When only diesel comes out the system is primed and the car should start as normal.

Hope this helps, but I haven't tried it.
