The crappiest D2 is at least twice as a good as the best D1

    So I learnt this morning

Won't be taking the D2 loaner ever again. Could get used to it.

If all the accessories carried over from a D1 I'd upgrade, but they don't, so I'll just keep banking for that HDJ100R.

    You are kidding me right!?

Well, I guess it depends on what you really mean.

The D2 is more refined on the road, but give me a D1 anyday offroad!

    Most D2s don't even have a diff-lock, so aren't even real 4wds.

Jesus H Christ...are you for real?!?!

I'd trust a 300 any day over anything under any circumstances (hence why I spend months before purchase), so what in gawds name is the OP hoping to achieve? ????????????????

Not trying to achieve anything... much. Just a first opportunity I've had to compare a D1 and D2 back to back.

But seriously... a 1998 300Tdi auto ES would have nothing on a Td5 auto base model.

Little things... like door handles that have a nice positive feel, the gear selector and switchgear has a good tactile sensation, braking you can believe in, quietness, exponentially greater stability, decent power, air con not bogging revs down (bloody good system at that too)... in terms of ride and handling it's more akin to a Mercedes with a reinvented, powerful 300D, shaped like a Land Rover.

Mate, you need a consultation session with Carlson Cresly to suit the metro-sexualnes of that post.

I'll agree with dissent against the auto transmission, but the rest of your comments are straight-out BS if you want a proper off-roader...perhaps youd be more comfortable in a friggin Prado (and yes I and many others WILL hang shi*t on you and the vehicle for).

Grow a pair, switch onto what you're driving and what it what it's designed for, and particularly pay attention at what the update models are designed for...I've seen blogs on how they went from continent to another, not for their suppleness.

I issue a cement pill for you in a mandatory perscription!

    horses for courses.

    I have a Td5 D2 and a mate has a 300Tdi D1.

His departure angle vs my load space.
His suspension travel vs my 3 amigos.... I mean traction control.
He gets better slightly better economy: I have slightly more power.

I love my D2 and I can see some positives of the D1.

What I don't like about the D1 is the low windscreen.
