    Defender speedo wobble

I'm having almost exactly this problem
    http://www.aulro.com/afvb/series-3/1...ly-speedo.html
but in my Defender so the cause is probably different anyway.

The speedo needle rapidly fluctuates back and forth by 20-30km'h when driving. The odometer works fine, as far as I can tell.

The problem is much worse at lower speeds - at speeds above about 80 (indicated) it settles right down...
It's not broken. It's "Carbon Neutral".

If the odometer is working correctly, it won't be a slipping drive. The most likely problem is a kinked speedo cable, or possibly just dry, and very unlikely, has a loose strand.

I had this - it got progressively worse until the speedo died completely.

The cable was frayed out on the inside and broke. I got a new one on ebay for next to nothing - it took less than 5min to swap it over.

Replace the speedo cable first. It's fairly cheap and doesn't take too long.

That's what I did with mine and it made a huge difference to the wildly swinging needle.

Next it will be the speedo but so far so good.

Yeah, I'd replace the speedo cable too - it's cheap and in my experience with the same symptoms fixed the problem.

    Defender speedo wobble

Is it possible to just change the inner cable or should you change the whole unit? Jim

It is possible - but I have not seen just the inner sold for many years!

    Replace the whole cable.

It relies upon running freely which you wont be able to guarantee when using the old speedo cable sheath. It may be filled with gunk or worn internally.
