Horrible squeal from rear wheel area..... ! !

    Gday...

We have a 2006 Discovery 3 TDV6 Auto SE which we have owned for only five days ..... and it has developed in the last 3 days a very loud squeal from the driver's side rear wheel area.

It first appeared only when moving off first thing when vehicle cold - only in forward not in reverse - and disappeared after about 50 to 100 metres.

However, yesterday it began to show up when moving off even when hot after driving around. It also was there when turning tightly left and would squeal until back to straight. It gave a little squeal when going slowly over a speed hump - as the weight came back down after the hump (travelling only at about 10kph).

    Anyone experienced this?

We have the usual 3 month warranty from dealer (Land Rover dealer) and have yet to have them get back to me on what they think it may be.

    Look forward to any ideas.

    Cheers

    Julie & John

Sounds like the handbrake might be dragging/jamming.

That's the only common(ish) cause of noise from the rear.

Almost certainly it will be the EPB adjustment and/or cleaning.
Try applying and releasing it a number of times.
A common problem with lots of threads on this site to give you details.

    Handbrake squeeler?
Or you may just have a stone jammed between the disk and the guard.
    Is the EPB light on?

    EPB Noise

I have the same problem (2005 D3) and it is almost certainly the EPB. Apparently one fix is a new actuator and that comes in at ~$1000 + fitting. The D4 and current RRS has an improved actuator.

At the last service the guys at FWD Motors reckoned that Land Rover in Brisbane didn't have a cure but the forums overseas are starting to show a few entries on the subject.

FWD Motors asked around for me and they cleaned the drums and it worked for a few kms then failed again.

Last week I was in Jindabyne and a poor guy in a black 2006 D3 was stuck in a car park as it had locked on. I showed him how to release it by removing the panel etc which got him going. He also had only had the vehicle for a short while. I guess this point is that it is not something to ignore.

I suggest you go back within the three months warranty and make sure it is fixed as it is an expensive squeak at this point in time. In the mean time I am hoping the brains trust at aulro comes up with a more affordable fix.

Apologies for the less than positive news and hope this helps.

    Cheers PK

Well my EPB stopped working yesterday.

As Scouse knows on the weekend trip to Lithgow/Mt Walker last Sunday 4th July, my D3 started squealing intermittently when the EPB was applied.

As my wife was staying in the Mountains with the kids for the week (school holidays) and me back at work I assumed it would be fine until the next scheduled service which is booked for next Tuesday.

Yesterday afternoon my wife rang in a panic saying the park brake would not disengage, so using the info on the site I talked her through the manual release, which I note worked better when I told her to put the car in neutral rather than in "park".

So if you car starts squealing when you use the EPB get this seen to quickly and/or make a note of the manual release procedure.

    Regards,

    George

Just a quick follow up about the handbrake squeal… Austral Land Rover has fixed it as it was apparently an adjustment and a clean. They also noted it hadn’t been adjusted by them for two (2) whole years.

The ‘computer’ said a replacement switch was also necessary to help justify the wash and vacuum so I didn’t argue.

The Service guy mention that there is a chance it ‘may’ need replacement sometime in the future so I suggest it is a known issue.

Thought you should know about the occasional happy ending.

Hi Guys, If you have the noise problem coming from the rear wheels you need you hand brake adjusted, for those whom may wish to adjust the Handbrake themselves please read on. First place your vehicle on level ground. Chock the front wheels and one rear that you arnt working on. Undo the rear wheel nuts and jack up the rear so you can remove the wheel. Next you need to put your vehicle in neutral, so you will have to put the key in the ignition and foot on the brake to do this. Once this is done release the hand brake. Now when looking at the centre section of the rear disc you will see a plastic cap using a screwdriver pop the plug out. Next rotate the disc and look inside the hole, you are looking for a silver 4mm allen head screw. Loosen this screw one turn only. Next rotate the disc and look inside the hole you are looking for a circular ratchet with teeth, when you have found it rotate it in a clockwise direction using a screwdriver untill it becomes tight. You wont be able to turn the disc. Now rotate the ratchet in a anticlockwise directions 8 teeth of the ratchet,Next re-tighten the allen key, place the plug back in its hole, refit your wheel, then proceed and do the same for the other side. Once complete you have successfully adjusted your hand brake.
