Long range fuel tanks

Has anyone experierenced problems with long range fuel tanks on either Defender or Discovery, I am specifically looking for leaks, cracks or fuel starvation problems. I am not interested in any particular brand but a brand name would be appreciated.

Hi Rushy, I have an Out Of Town 127 litre tank in my 2000MY 130.So far, so good.I have not tried to use its entire capacity so I don't know how it delivers right down to the last litre. I understand the fuel pump is kept cool by the fuel in the tank so it is unwise to run them very low.Cheers, 130man.

I've got a longranger 132l in our defender and apart from gargling and belching at the end of the fill it's been problem free so far, touch wood.

X2 for the Long Ranger, mine is in a 98 Defender. And yes the burping at the end of the fill.

I have now had 2 Long Rangers for a total of almost 18years.

My current one has been in 10 years on my 91RRC and has been faultless over the roughest roads and corrugations in Australia.

The ONLY issue I have had was with the installation where recently after a trip to the Kimberleys the wiring for my numberplate lights was pinched between the tank and the floor.

AFAIK the differences between a good long range tank and a bad is that the mounts fail on poor quality ones.

LRA (Long Range Automotive) Long Range tanks will crack the chassis outrigger on the Disco2.

When I asked them about it they didn't seem to want to know about it - so I hope they read this.

I know of 3 that have cracked, and in one case the companion tank fell out only just after getting out of the Simpson desert. These also leak fuel from somewhere at the top - I suspect around the pump.

Brown Davis tanks have a horrific reputation for failing, falling out and internal baffles coming apart despite their capacity. the staff there are also apparently arrogant, rude and diabilical to have anything to do with.

From what I have seen, the Long Ranger / Out of Town / ARB long range tank (they're the same tank) are the ones that don't give problems, but they are a little more expensive.

I have a 132litre Longranger, very happy with it. Have fitted a few of their products and happy with quality and fit.
Dolium make good aux tanks for Defenders, easy to fit too.

I have one that leaks apparently, but that could be due to the previous owners bodgy repair job.

One thing I've noticed after several years of outback travel is that fuel tank failure goes hand in hand with after market tanks. I've probably come across a dozen cases over the last 20 years or so. All have been either home made, Lone Ranger or Brown Davis tanks. Are there other manafacturers? All had either split seams or had the mounts ripped off. This is probably a small number in the grand scheme of things, but it has led me to conclude that if you want to carry fuel safely and reliably and save your $1K or so, buy a few jerry cans. Not high tech but transportable between 4WD's and if one does leak you don't lose all your fuel and they are cheap.

I think you should be sure about which tanks you mean.
Long Ranger ( made in Newcastle) tanks have a great reputation and were the only ones Graeme Cooper would fit , even though the others were cheaper.

On the other hand the LRA ( AFAIK Long Range Automotive) tanks and Brown Davis, which I think are the same tank are the ones I have heard of having problems .
There is no tank called a Lone Ranger AFAIK,although there may be one called Tonto.
