Removing electric windows from defender.

The 'smug' thread has just reminded me of a project I want to do - Removing my front electric windows. I hate the damn things. I haven't ripped the door off to have a look yet, but is it as simple as removing the motor assembly and chucking on a handle?

not quite.

IMHO the easiest way of doing it is just to swap the doors over. find someone with the same colour deefer as yours thats pre electric windows and ask them if they want to go swapsies.

Its doable you just need the winder mech and trim from the older vehicle and a bit of patients.

May I ask what it is about them you hate.
I;ve often (I know) thought that it would be handy to have them so you can lower the opax side one to talk to people outside etc.

I just dislike the idea of too many electronics. I know the chances of this are rare but say you can't open the door for whatever reason and the car has died so you can't open the windows. If you need to get out in a hurry it wouldn't be fun.

Once again probably an extremely rare case but I have heard of it happening. Plus I just dislike too many electronics in cars, too many things that could go wrong. I'm also planning on removing central locking and alarms, going to put that off for a while seeing as I'm moving to the big smoke soon though.

Not questioning your decision, but if you're concerned about getting out with stuck windows consider one of the rescue hammer or window breaker devices. Much faster than winding a window down, and still works if for some reason the mechanism is jammed (either manual or electric).

Same as VladTepes, I'd like a electric pax window so you can wind it down from the drivers seat. Great if you have the windows down for ventilation and are coming up to a muddy puddle etc. Drivers window I actually prefer manual as they are faster to wind up/down.

if you get caught up in any of the shed class rovers and are unable to open the doors...

climb through to the back place both feet on the lower corners of the rear window and push it'll pop out easily.

if your in something thats newer than a series jump in the passanger seat and flick your legs up over the dash plant your feet and give it some push and the windshield will pop out. (not sure if that works in a puma)

I love the lectric windows but...

How many times have I switched off, grabbed the keys, jumped out, and DAMN!!! left the window down.

I think the disco's(?) have a 30sec. timer so you can push the up button without turning the ignition back on?

Had a hire car once that automatically shut all windows when you pushed the button to lock the car.

Either way, any one added some means of getting the windows up without putting the key back in etc.???

remove the fuse to the power windows, turn on the ignition and work out which side of that fuse is powered.

leave the fuse out and run a fused wire from the battery or other hot power feed into the non power side of the fuse holder.

power windows on 24/7, takes all of about 2 minutes to do if you have the bridging cable premade.
