300 Tdi vs Td5

Probably been asked heaps of times before but opinions from those who own em on reliability and good and bad points between the two.

uummm prity much, search is your friend here, there are countless threads about it,

, tdi, old slow basic and it works, and can be fixed pretty much with race tape and zip ties,

td5, run buy computers, if looked after is very strong, preventive maintenance is the key with td5s, very easy to make them go well aswell, just a simple remap and your off,

Tdi oriented to the home repair market...they are so do-able.
they are over engineered to take a fair amount of abuse (military driving) and go on and on.

Td5's can be maintained to be reliable and tinkered with to boost performance if you are looking for a 4x4 to race Td5 is your friend

The TD5 engine is a lot nicer to work on than Tdi IMO.

Both are good engines, and in reality the condition and history of the rest of the car is probably more important.

Having said that I wouldn't have a Tdi anymore

No computers to go wrong or get oil in harnesses or drown.
Gutless - ish.
Easier for the average mechanic to fix out bush.
No computers
Oh and did I mention - no computers is a GOOD thing.

More expensive to fix when broken.

If I was in the market I'd be asking the same Q's as you but already having a Tdi I am not about to spend $ to change.

Tdi 95-98 for the good un's
Td5 2002 best as you get the better comp/wiring harness and a salisbury rear diff.(in the defender 110/130) 2003-07 better(harness+flashable as compared to rechiping 99-01) than 99-01.

Not to hijack the thread but why did LR get rid of the salisbury in 03?

Tdi's give the same or better performance than the equivalent engines of their era,with allot,and I mean allot cheaper running.Td5's are just as reliable and any issue's they have are very well known and aren't any problem because they are well known.The Td5 has allot more scope for improvement than the Tdi and when ''worked'' will easily outperform any Jap diesel this side of a D4D and be allot cheaper to run,and in the case of the D4D use allot less oil. No doubt the 300Tdi is a great motor until you have to spend $9k on a rebuild

I had a '95 version in the Disco....there was a cable from the accelerator pedal and not a potentiometer. The most sophisticated component was the cassette player.

However the rest of the vehicle is just as important.

There is a lot of other stuff that can wear out in the years since the motor was new.

A late model Td5 will narrow the gap from 12 years of use to 4 years.

tdi owners say theirs and TD5 owners theirs.
Thats just normal I guess.
I have a tdi and do sometimes wish I had a TD5.
For now I am just happy it keeps on going and has not let me down.
