    A Frame Towing Breaking

    G'day All,

Has anyone had any experience with setting up a breaking system for a S2A while being towed by an A-Frame.

I have the design for the A-Frame etc but as the S2a is obviously over 750kg, not sure how to provide breaking, maybe an enertia overide on the A-Frame connected to the handbreak???

    Any ideas welcome.

    Cheers

    Ben

No the hand brake would be a bad idea its transmission mounted and not designed to pull the vehicle up.
I cant answer your question though usually they were towed behind graders and the like and it didn't matter.

I assume you mean "braking" and not "breaking".

Of course get your "braking" system wrong and you could see yourself "breaking" your SIIA.

I see what you mean djam1, but I must admit that I've used the handbreak to pull me up on a few occasions when the standard S2A "braking" system was "broken"

And thanks for the "spelin" lesson disco2hse

No problemo, just while Ron's out of action

Just about the braking. I don't think you need to worry about it. Many vehicles are towed with A-frames and no additional braking is required.

Thanks for the links Garry. Plenty to ponder!

I think as you say that it would probably a lot "easier" legally to use a trailer, it's just that the A-Frame principal is so simple:

    • No extra cost of purchase / rego for a trailer
    • Less weight on the towing vehicle
    • No problems of where to park/store the trailer at the end use point
    • Being able to dismantle the A-Frame and take it with you in case of a breakdown etc.
It's just the issue of being able to activate the brakes in the towed vehicle from the towing vehicle??? This seems to be the biggest hurdle.

    Cheers

You need to have the towed vehicle registered and there need to be lights on the back. A long cable and lights bar like boaties use is good for this.
Adapting an electric actuator to the brake would be the fun part. At least you can then plan a break-away system where the towed vehicle battery operates the actuator in event of failure of the A frame.

There are plenty of motor homes driving around towing suzukis on A frames - so there must be commercially available equipment to activate the brakes - they cannot all be bodged jobs.

Maybe check with the Winnebago company for their advice.

This answers the brake issue - override brakes up too 200kg and I assume electric for heavier vehicles. http://www.hitchngo.com.au/faqs.htm
