    D4 Suspension

    Hi,

Can someone please give me a quick brief on the construction of the D4 suspension. I was under the impression that it consisted of four air bags that are inflated and deflated as required.

It was mentioned on another thread that noise in that area can be caused by a shock (absorber) losing gas.

Is there an internal shock as well as the airbags? If so, are they standard bits of kit or integral to the airbag system? Or do the airbags have a gas pre-charge and that is what can leak?

    Cheers,

    Kev.

    Kev,
The Air Springs on the D3/4/RRS all consist of a shock absorber that runs up the centre of the air spring.
Something has to stop the air springs bouncing up & down the highway after a bump, so shocker are used.

    Cheers

4 airbags, 4 internal shocks as normal, never had one fail, only had one bend and that stopped it from going up and down, how they bent it IDK,,

for the noise, depends what noise,, the air sus can make lots of normal operating noises,

I know how a standard set-up works but in the D4 I never really gave it much thought as it looks like an enclosed system..one of which I evidently know nothing about...LOL...just thought that the system would do what it has to do with air pressure.....

    Thanks.

    Thanks stig0000,

Definately not a good noise or an operational noise of the compressor or venting.....it's a creaking noise.....like a standard car makes when really old. Only happens on speed humps and rough stuff though.

It started when I was on Fraser Island and I assumed since the whole car was creaking and groaning by the end of the week, due to salt spray and sand, that it would sort it'self out as the rest of the car did. But it hasn't.

    Regards.

    Kev.

    Kev,
I know exactly what you are hearing, mine does the same.
Its just the bushes that have dust in them & dried up a little.
I played a couple of weeks ago & lubed the sway bar bushes & rubbers everywhere, made a huge difference.
I may have to replace bushed but will see how it goes for know.

    Cheers.

    Thanks for that Pete,

    I'll look into that.

    Kev
