Original oil bath air filter with holden 186

I have a series 3 with holden 186 conversion. Still running he oil bath type filter connected to the holden carby. Will it improve engine performance and fuel economy to put a pod type filter on the carby with a paper element or some other alternative, or is the original filter giving me some unknown benefit? Runs fine, just most people with 186s say the engine needs good free running air to perform optimally. Any advice from those who have done this before is appreciated.

Keep the oil bath filter for long trips through bulldust. For town use put on a atandard Holden air cleaner assembly, works well enough in cars. Don't use pod filters, they are not as good at filtering as a standard filter system.
The main gain to economy will be to using less throttle to maintain cruising below the power valve setting and in the vac advance in the timing.
