It has been known that a dodgy starter motor can disrupt the injector signals. It can be a tricky one to trace though (an oscilloscope can help).
Hi All,
I am new to the AULRO site so I'm having some difficulty navigating my way through the site.
I have a 2000 Defender Td5 utility that doesn't want to start. It is currently at the Land Rover dealer workshop and so far they are completely baffled.
The engine turns over but just wont start. New fuel pump fitted but still no go.
They have checked the injector harness and all is good. They are waiting on a new fuel pressure gauge to check the pressures from the pump and we are also installing a new battery as the present battery is a bit low in the electrolytes.
If anyone has come across this problem before I would like to find out what else might be the problem.

Hi All,
I have a 2000 model Defender TD5 that I have just purchased but it is a non goer. It turns over but wont start. It is presently at the local LR dealer but they are completely baffled. It has had a new genuine fuel pump fitted and the dealer mechanic has run through the air purge proceedures several times but it still wont go. We are about to try a new battery as the old one in low in electrolytes and wont pick up after charging. They have check the injector wiring but still no go.
Has anyone got any ideas please?
I thought it disrupted the crank position sensor, rather than the injectors Scouse?
Will it bump start?
Gday and Welcome to the forum
Hope you sort it out,but surely a dealer mechanic must have some idea...
Cheers Ean
The only time my TD5 wouldn't start (other than flat battery)was when the belt tensioner bearing had totally collapsed and welded itself seized solid no matter how much cca we hooked up to it it wouldn't go..
Try starting it with the drive belt off..
Do the Defenders have an enertia fuel cut off switch? could be that..
Cheers Ean
check the inertia switch and the earths for the relays and the fuel pump.
is the pump powering up or not.

I too would be looking at the inertial cut off switch or crank position sensor/ plug. There is a relay which supplies power to the ECU (AFAIK under the drivers seat) which can cause some issues, worth a look.
But if it is at a LR dealer I'm sure they would have already known and checked these things.
cheers
Hi All,
Thanks for all the suggestions. I checked with the dealer again today and still no luck. To date they have checked the fuel pressures from the pump (by the way, its a new LR genuine pump)to the regulator. Removed cleaned, checked, and refitted the regulator, checked the injector cables and ECU,fitted a new battery, and tested the Crank Angle sensor and still no go. Apparently the fuel pressure regulator had been removed by previous owner and replaced using silastic for a gasket. Not sure what grade of Silastic was used but may silicone sealants deteriorate rapidly when exposed to diesel. They think that some of the silastic may have gone through and blocked the injectors. They admit that it is very unusual for all 5 injectors to block at the same time but I guess given the circumstances it is possible. Now they have to remove all the fuel lines to the injectors and thoroughly clean them. I have aquired a second hand set of 5 injectors which the supplier will guarantee so with very little else to try we have to give it a go. When we eventually find the problem I will post another thread to let everyone know as others may suffer the same problem in the future. Thanks again for all the suggestions. If anyone has more I would be glad to know as we are getting desperate for more ideas. By the way, no reflection on the dealer mechanic. He is a TD5 Defender owner himself and he is very knowledgeable but this one is proving to be a challenge for him.
