    Towing

    Hey all,

just after some advice after taking out 5th gear in my defender (R380) as a result from towing a caravan.

Is towing a camper trailer in 5th gear going to cause the same issues as towing a caravan.

    IIRC towing in 5th with a R380 isn't recommended

    Correct.

The R380 is quite good in its application , especially the later suffix K and L boxes, as they have bigger LAyshaft bearings and stronger mainshafts aswell. Check Ashcroft engineering in the UK for a rundown on these transmissions.

5th gear bearing support is better in these boxes than most others, and I wouldn't have any worries with a camper trailer up to 1.5t, and an unchipped Td5 or an untweaked/ tweaked Tdi.

I am just looking at a box type trailer or ute back trailer conversion + tent type option and getting rid of the caravan.

You'll be fine then, just adhere to 20,000km trans oil changes if doing heaps of towing, or 40K intervals with normal use. Use a good quality oil, Castrol Syntrans is the best, We use Valvoline Duragear 75w85 and it is fine and not as $$$ as Syntrans. However, at 40K intervals $25/ litre isn't much when 2.7litres is involved.
