    TD5 engine noise when cold

    Im looking at a TD5 Defender that is making a Ticking noise under load from the engine but it goes away after it warms up, sounds like a bad exhaust manifold leek from one cylinder but it is definatly load related as it only comes when you give it a bit of throtle if you take it real easy when its cold I doesnt make the noise and it dosent seem to be down on power, plus it may be using a bit of water but cant be 100% sure on how much, I suspected the head gasket but aparently its been doing this for a while now I would have thought It would have blown badly by now if it where the head gasket, Any one had a similar problem Thanks

    Probably just the usual warped manifold. Check the studs & make sure they're all still there (usually the back one goes).

    Pretty common for Td5's to have manifold leaks, usually they squeal like a slipping belt when pushed hard cold though. Maybe yours is only just beginning to leak? Check around 1 and 5 cylinder ports for soot.

    Common to warp manifold too, this is what stretches and breaks the studs. Search on here 'Td5 exhaust manifold leaks' and you'll see what I mean.

    Not sure if its the same but just before my belt tensioner seized it started to make a noise similar, that seemed to go when the engine was running, maybe it was just harder to hear from inside the car, but was definately there at start-up and I originally thought of exhuast manifold studs


    Worth a look..

    My first thought was a manifold leak but I didnt think it would go away when warm and be so engine load effected, So thats where i will look first, then I will check out the coolant problem seems to loose a bit of water, but system will hold pressure for a few hrs after its been parked so if there is a leak its going to be hard to find do the caps play up much?

    The manifold leak will reduce slightly when warm, and the pressures under load are very much higher hence the symptoms load related. I would check fuel cooler and radiator for minor weeping, and at worst case coolant consumption without obvious leaks could be leading to a head gasket failure. This isn't uncommon on early (pre 2001) Td5's.

    3 years went. Did you find the problem?

    Have similar problem on my td5 -99 and wounder if it was the head gasket, manifold leak or something else?

    My Td5 ran for months and months with a leaking head gasket. It'd use about a pint of water a week and then finally started to pressurise the system! SWIMBO was driving it at the time!! Early Td5's had silly plastic type dowels to locate the head... Over time, these crumble into powder and allow the head to 'slip'. Not a difficult job to do. Re the tap, as said b4, look at the exhaust manifold. As the engine warms, everything expands, sealing up the hole and hushing the 'tapping'. That said, mine still has an intermittent high speed 'tap' which comes at high revs and is only ever under load. Let go of the throttle a few times and it stops... Been doing it since I owned it and never got worse! Still at a loss as to what it might be but suspect one of the injectors as the minute I lift off the throttle and re apply it usually goes away. Sometimes it takes several decelerate/accelerate bursts to stop it though!!

    Is it definitely loosing water, mine sits about half an inch below the cold level line no matter how much I top it up, it seems to have found it's own level and is happy there
