yes success rate is about 50/50 if your not successfull on the first go its not likely that you will be on subsequent goes.
in the long run its generally less stressfull and easier on the wallet to just put in a new unit.

Has anyone tried to rebuild a 300tdi power steering pump which has leaking seals?
..... and if so, how did it go and what difficulties arose?
new cost seems to range from abt $320 (ZF) to abt $210 (non-genuine)

I think it's fraught with risk to try and change a seal, especially when the entire pump costs this from the UK

just your time and patients.
if you do it and you get it and it works chances are it'll go well for quite some time.
I usually fit a replacement one as fixing it just to have it fail usually means youve blown the cost of the parts, the time invovled in fixing and refitting the pump and the cost of the oil.

yes Dave & Rick, you're righht - I'll replace it with a new one and then I'll play with the old one - I've had abit of luck with the vacuum pumps so nothing to lose as I see it - I just don't know quite where to start that's all
Dave, with other types of pumps I've tried to service (never tried a PS pump) and big old open drive refrig compressors that 50% of the time the front main bearings shagged anyway, or on its way out (and it's what has caused the seal to fail)
Is this what you tend to find on the PS pumps too ?
once you've replaced it do what I did.
have a guess and crack on, whats the worst you can do to an already buggered unit?

i've opened up both my power steering pumps, due to me thinking they were kangaroo edward, easy as,
i was quite surprised how easy to open up and put back together.
mind you, i wouldn't want to go further than pull the back off for a look.
the next challenge is the power steering box!

						Hi Harry,
I am wondering what gasket you used?
I just put my power steering pump back together. The original gasket in mine was some sort of silicone. It looks like the valve body needs to be under a bit of pressure, so the back of the pump dose not sit flush on the pump housing. Do you know what I mean? I found there was a roughly 0.4mm gap between the two. When assembled finger tight. The two halves need to be under some compressive force in order for the valve to be sealed. I found when using .4mm gasket paper, that when tightened the compression of the paper was too much and the pump did not rotate freely. So next I tried 0.8mm, this allowed me to compress it properly and still not so much that the pump would not rotate freely. These obviously need careful setup. I still have not put it on the car yet so am not sure if i fixed it
