New pto winch(best set up)

gday guys, just brought a thomas pto winch for my 2001 110 single cab just wondering what would be the best mounting method. do u recomend a central mount or front mount? could anyone tell me a little more on the existing pto in the transfer case and what the best hook up system would be? please note the winch comes with shafts but they may need to be modified.

it will require ALOT of work to mount it centraly....not saying it cant be done, but reqires alot of thought. also how will you drive it if centraly mouted. Front mount will be simplest and cover most of your needs.

do you have all the parts ie: PTO drive, shafts, bearing supports etc

Centrally mounted PTO would be the ideal setup, as you can set up to winch from both the front and the rear, it doesn't reduce approach angle, and doesn't add ~ 50 kg over the front wheels. BUT, as Serg said, it would require A LOT of work. Most people (myself included opt for the front mount, as it is significantly simpler to setup (and even that's not simple).

All that said, I hope you bought a complete PTO setup including a PTO drive, winch and driveshafts. Unfortunately, no transfer case comes equipped with a PTO drive. They have an input gear where one can be attached, but you still need a PTO drive. My PTO drive for a 4 speed LT95 below:



It attaches to the bottom of the LT95 transfer case (replacing the rectangular inspection plate) and is chain driven from the input gear. The PTO drive then drives the PTO winch via a series of shafts.

Unfortunately, PTO units for the Lt230 transfer cases (like the one you have in your 2001 ute) are as rare as hen's teeth. You are very lucky if you have one. Connecting it is finnicky, but not too difficult. I'm mounting mine to the front using an army winch bar.

depending on the configuration and what you have...

the single pto for a lt230 isnt hard to source but its pricey to buy and rarer than hens tooth laden rocking horse poo second hand.

I like the idea of a centralised rear mounted winch but if you;ve got the rear tank you cant do it without compromising internal load space.

Front mount is the easiest to do IF you can get a front facing output.

I am surprised no one makes the pto attachment?
I looked into this myself then backed off as to hard as non standard and cant get the parts.

Didn't Maxidrive used to make LT230 PTO. I wonder if that is one of the items that MR Automotive were going to produce?

The Perentie used a bottom PTO on the LT95 as in the above pic to standardise parts between the 6X6 and 4X4, but usually the Thomas used a rear output PTO and drop box.

I won't tell you that I have recently purchased all three types.

• LT95 rear/drop box forward output.
• LT95 bottom forward output.
• LT230 rear/drop box forward output.

But only have two Thomas winches to go with them, so there's a spare.

The tease is that none of the PTO are for sale.

pto driven hydraulic pump, they had one sitting one there shelf last time i was in there

MD did in fact make a chain driven pto for driving a shaft forward to a winch. This for the Lt230. MR Automotive would be worth a call.

MD also made one with a front shaft output and rear output for hyd pump.

of course they also made the hyd pto for pumps on the lt230....and a one off double output hyd pto.... it even has a spare set of gears

hey guys, thanks for the great info most helpful. i will be posting pictures of winch, drop box, and shafts, yet to get a pto drive unit, but any info on on one would be appreciated. will call maxi drive & mr auto to see what they have. looks like might have a go at central mount system when i find the drive.
