    Anchoring the Tirfor.

    Hi,
I used the tirfor to roll a large log on the weekend.
Just for practice, it needed to be moved so it was a good excuse to see how it all worked.
I set it all up and was using a tree protector, yep, shackle this to the rear end of the tirfor.

    Wrong!

Can't fit a shackle and the loops of the tree protector into the rear pin assembly on the tirfor.

I jury rigged a short length of hardware shop chain a couple of loops through the shackle and the rear of the winch as the load was not all that great.

But that will not do for a serious pull with a bogged 4wd.

My thinking is to get (say) 3 links of chain that will fit in the tirfor and I can shackle a tree protector and a return cable if using a 2:1 reduction as well.

What are others using? I would appreciate some input from those familiar with using the tirfor type winch and some comment on how this problem has been resolved.

    cheers

You can shackle a tree protector through a Tirfor, That's what I've done on numerous occasions. I suspect it would depend on the tree protector and the size of the shackle though.

    Hi,
thanks for that, I hauled the beast out again and fiddled about with placing the strap loops in a more compact position, and pushed the rubber boot (where the cable exits) back and was able to connect it despite my misgivings that there was not room for the cable to exit and run freely. It did.

Just leave the shackle out altogether.
Two loops go through the lock pin - done. Unless of course that pin is not removeable?
On mine its is captive but able to be slid out enough to slide the loop ends in.

    How wide is the turfor?
I used to get the tree protector into the pin with no need for the shackle.
Just doubled the strap as you have done on the shackle.
Just check to see if it rubs on the housing though.
    Cheers, Kyle

    Hi,
    Thanks for that.
How come I didn't see that possibility?

It now looks so obvious, I feel like a dill!

AULRO is certainly a great forum
