    Spare Wheel Query

    Hi all,
Had one of my alloy wheels re-done as it was damaged and in the meantime, drove on my spare.
The new wheel was put back on which left me to put the spare back up underneath.
I wound the bracket and cable down as close to the ground as possible. It was still a fair way off the ground, which meant that I had to crawl under and lift the wheel as high as possible whilst struggling with the pain in the arse bracket.
In my way of thinking, the cable should be long enough to allow you to thread the bracket through without having to lift the wheel off the ground.
Is this normal, or is there something wrong with my cable/bracket set up????
Advice would be much appreciated as I let out way too many 'F' words in the process.
    Cheers, Craig

Sorry mate, can't help you on your question but wanted to ask if the wheel re-work was expensive and how bad was the damage?

I broke all 4 wheels on Fraser Island but the car was still driveable....just couldn't balance the wheels. Insurance covered it though so didn't have to worry....but was thinking if I were to just bend one in the future or something like that.....how much would it cost.

    I have the 19" D4 wheels.

    Cheers,

    Kev.

    Hi Kev,
Mine were scratched, not broken as such. It cost me $110.00 inc fitting and balancing.
    I also have the 19" wheels (D4 SE 3.0)

No, it was in normal mode. Still wouldn't have been enough.

Oh OK, thanks. Apparently some alloys can be re-rolled.....so I thought that was what you meant.

    Regards,

    Kev.

Did you have tension on the hanger when you were winding it down?

Yes, I had my son underneath pulling on the cable while I was winding......to the point where I thought I would break something

I find in the D3 that the cable is just long enough. But it's such a pain trying to manoeuvre the hook into the rim I end up with the spare lying on my leg so there's some slack to play with.

I think that LR need to have a serious think about the spare wheel set up when they are designing the D5.
Not only was the cable too short but the hook is a pain in the arse to thread through. Having to unload the whole of the wagon is no fun either.
I felt like I had gone a few rounds with Mike Tyson, time I finally finished puting the spare back up in its place.
