    V8 motor to gear/box options

Just putting it out there for those in the know, will a late series 1 gear box handle the pwr from a standed rover V8? dont plan on doing skids or lighting up the tyres jsu think it would be better then a holden 6 cyl that i have.

Inspired, not really. It's O.K. if you can go fast but will you be able to stop and steer as well.

I ran a 253CID Holden V8 on a Suffix D SIIa box, but the vehicle had an improved dual circuit MasterVac (in place of the Girling mastervac) on 3"X11 brakes - but these days I rather have a RRc/Disco/Defender and keep the series vehicles standard. The long term reliability of the series box was a problem and the Series 1 box/t-fer are not as strong as the Suffix D transmission.

You won't find me on: faceplant; Scipe; Infragam; LumpedIn; ShapCnat or Twitting. I'm just not that interesting.

i like early Landys as they are too and to keep them original definitley holds their value, if i wanted an early land rover with a V8 id prabably opt for the S3 Stage 1 V8. but just interests me on how the converson/s are done theres hardly any space in a s1 engine bay for a v8!

Anyways some of you may have seen this before but this is a series 1 with more than a bit of Grunt! well whats left of it today i heard it got totalled on the 1/4 mile run....!
and it did runs like 8.57 at 156 MPH in the quarter-mile.

    Cheers

I'm chasing down the V8 & gearbox for you Brendo, rang up my mate this arvo and he's going to get back to me soon. As we discussed, I rekon you might as well use the RRC 5 speed aswell. A rover V8 in a Series 1 would certianly be cool but it's a huge waste of time if it's infront of a bloody crash box, they novelty soon wears off if you are driving it regularly. Not to mention with the full time 4wd from the RRC you also have a lesser chance of stripping an axle...

After much thinking ive decided to ditch the idea of droping in a V8 and instead i will replace the holden engine with a 2.25 petrol engine that way the drive-train should last

Could you use the 3.5 engine & gbox from a Stage 1 V8? that way the adapting bit is already done! this is an interesting thread!

The Stage 1 is a classic Range Rover 4 speed LT95 box and is very long. Probably too long for an 86/88 Series 1. The shortest bellhousing for the LT95 box is that from a 101 Land Rover, but you will also need the 101 primary pinion.

    O dear

    For the love of GOD
put the correct engine in front of the correct gear box
Land Rovers had enough problems, without putting more H.P. than the Brothers had when they made the most versatile vehicle
If you want to stuff it up, go somewhere else it is hard enough to get them right without reinventing the wheel
It is like putting Holden engines in the vehicle and calling it still a Land Rover
If you want to be a CLOWN join a Circus.
    cheers to all the believers
    Ian
