    How much should i pay?

Hi all. im new to the forum. i owned a seies 1 landy many years ago. Sold it years ago. Im going to buy a series IIa soon but was wondering what they are worth to buy?

The one im interested in is a short wheel base, hard top, has land rover petrol engine and is in fairly straight condition. looks good for its age. mechanically it is ok but i think the engine is a bit tired. it has a rear main seal leak which is common. Gearbox has a slight issue but not noisy. drives well. tyres near new. look forward to your response.

    cheers wallydog

Hi and welcome. I reckon anywhere between $1,500 and $3,500 - depending on condition and what workshop facilities you have. Getting someone else to do your mech work can be expensive. Also it's worth more with rego and RWC. Probably a good idea to pull the brake drums off and see what condition the brakes are in and consider putting the 11" brakes on the front with a booster. Call me a cynic, but LR petrol motors were 'tired' when new.

    Hope this helps.

    cheers

    Welcome!
Mine looks good for its age and is quite straight, has a fairly tired engine, all the tyres needed replacing and a few other foibles, and was $1600 without rego or roadworthy.

Unhappy to buy or not to buy?

I drove the land rover 2A SWB Hardtop 2.25 petrol, yesterday and the engine wont idle. It drops very low and struggles to keep going. The engine runs bumpy but smoothes out at higher revs. it has a Zenith carb there, lack power.

There is an intermittent rattle coming from the gearbox/transfer case area more so at the low idle. not sure what that is.

The clutch made an awful noise once but then it was quiet. Dont know what that was?

He says he has fitted, new distributor, new carb, brake master cylinder, fuel pump.

It has no windows so will need to buy windows and maybe new door tops.

He wants $4000. Am i crazy to buy this?

$4000 sounds like a very high price considering the faults. Some people have no idea of the market value of these vehicles, all thinking they are extremely rare.
I would want rego and RWC and good condition and running engine and no odd noises from the gearbox for this price.

I generally agree. He has spent a bit of money on new tyres and a few peripherals probabaly trying to get it going properly but the engine runs miserably. im sure whats happened is that he bought the LR and sunk he says around 3k into it but thats not how buying and selling works. im happy to pay a reasonable price for it but $4000 should get you something with a sound engine and without suspect clutch or gearbox. I suspect something might be broken off in the clutch area? but cant be sure.

Im also happy to overhaul whats needed as i do my own work and have workshop facilities but a reasonable price is too much to ask here. i offered $3500 and he woudnt take it. Even that I think is a questionable overpayment. But at least that would pay for a clutch kit or something.

Shop around I'm sure you could pick up better Vehicle than that for said price.
$4000 for what sounds like a possible "lemon" is not worth it
Did you get any pic's of it? just to give the more knowledgeable members a better idea on what you are looking at.

A mate here in Bris just paid $600 for a tray back 1978 s3 109 with a holden 202 and a 5speed rebuilt land cruiser box and transfer case with all relevant engineering plates. We had the engine run today and sounds great, sure he has a small amount of work to do on the body but it has a GS FFR chassis in perfect nick, galv tray and would take only a couple of weekends tinkering for rego.
Just thought to give a little perspective.
Even $3500 seems a huge over spend on a possible drive train rebuild project. For $3500/4000 i want a get in and drive, not a get home and rebuild and spend.
I look at any money I spend as lost for the cause, I know I would never get any back upon sale, the best I could hope for would be that the money spent speeds up a sale.
A rebuilt diff looks as good as a 40yr old diff once installed and alters the sale price just as much (unless there are receipts to prove it).
    Look around for ages.
I got mine with perfect panels and chassis and only a broken rear axle for $1700 (sure I have spent $1000s on it since and nothing to show, but there are good priced buys out there)
Here it is at the moment,
