Brake controller/switch mounting

Hi all,

Has anyone fitted a Redarc remote head unit brake controller to their D4 yet? I am at a loss as to where to mount the LED and control knob in the interior...or any addition switch etc for that matter.

I was just going to place it in the lower panel under the steering wheel but learnt this morning that it appears to be some sort of "lined" panel which may prove problematic!

Am open to idea's, suggestions, examples...

PM Sniegy, he fitted one to my Defender and I believe he has fitted them to D3's, he owns a D4.

The unit can go anywhere there is space in a cavity. The simplest way to attach is sikaflex.

I would suggest the simplest thing is to drill two holes for the LED and dial and see if you can get a non-latching switch for the override button. I'm not familiar with the D3 or D4 so I don't know if the switches are the same behind the facia as the Defender and D2 or not. If they are then it would be easy to get hold of one and swap the facia with a blank one.

Page 4 has the photos of it installed in the honeycomb panel under the steering wheel.

I followed Sniegy's instructions, suggest you do the same. You can't go wrong!

Thanks guys - tried searching but didn't find Sniegy's post, am much wiser for finding it now

Based on reading the relevant trail of posts it appears that I now need to get a LED shunt? - bugger, something else to buy!!

The sparky has just finished my wire up (too busy with work atm to do it myself, hate paying for something I can do but hey what can you do...) so all I need to do now is install the controller which based on Sniegy's pics will be easy.

A couple of questions however:

- The sparky mentioned that Pin 1 and 5 were back to front on the D4 when he tested the unit so he has swaped these pins over on my trailer wire adaptor (convertor to 7 pin flat) - did anyone else experience this, seems a little odd to me...

- A dumb question now, what is the difference between the two trailer plugs on the back of the D3/D4 - I've been using the Black covered one?

Swap it back as there shoudn't be a problem.
The plugs are all moulded & i have not come across a faulty one yet.

Trailer Pin no.1 in Left hand indicator
Trailer Pin no.5 is your electric trailer brake feed (blue wire from trailer brake unit)

DONT go by the colors on the back of the plug as they ARE different, not color coded as you would normally think.

I normally find (not all)"Auto Sparkies" just run to existing colors without testing for actual findings.
Nothing that a $5.00 test light cant fix!

Bugger!! Had my auto electrician fit a Prodigy brake controller, Redarc dual batteries and Andersen plug last week. I recall him making the same comment about the the plug being wired wrong and that he had fixed it for me by removing the resin and swapping the wires over.......I suppose I should go put a test light on it (Don’t have the van to hook it up to yet) to confirm my suspicions.

He also assured me it would be fine to remove the black trailer connector (at my suggestion) to position the Anderson plug in its place. I hope we got that one right....

Edit: Tested the plug with the test light..everything appears in order.

Ok - a bit of an update re: the trailer brakes....

Connected the camper up tonight and got some not so good results

At first connect up the D4 threw up every conceivable error which included transmission fault, EBD failure etc etc! I disconnected the trailer plug and after two re-starts of the D4 everything cleared.

I then swapped pin number 2 and 5 over forgetting that 1 and 5 had been swapped by the sparky Basically this made the brake controller show that brakes applied constantly even when the brake pedal wasn't depressed.

Again I disconnected the trailer electrics which caused the controller to appear to operate normally with the red indicator light only coming on with the brakes. I did notice however that when the trailer electrics were connected with the ignition off the green light did indicate to show trailer brakes present however as soon as the ignition was cycled it went solid red. I also noticed that with the when the ignition was off and I closed the drivers door the brake lights flashed!

Ran out of light and time at this point - trailer adapter plug re-wired (KT762) as follows, will see how that goes:

1 left hand turn - yellow

2 reverse - black

3earth - white

4 right hand turn - green

5 electric brakes - blue

6 stop - red

7 tail, clearance, side markers - brown


Need to also add some traditional lights to the camper to get the D4 to recognise its there!
