Do other people have "normal" gutters?

Mine are flat rather than channel - seem to be filled with some sort of.... stuff. I'm a bit worried its bog or something like that which might be hiding a serious sin.

Thoughts ?

Hi,

Mine has that sort of bog stuff as well.

It meant that the roofracks did not stay on real well after they were bashed off a few times (see post re. height of 130!).

I got a sharp chisel and gouged a bit out where the roofracks mount, and put a little piece of aluminium channel into the levelled out bit, and then mounted the roofracks into the little piece of channel.

No problems since.

You didn't buy it from Melbourne did you?
I sold my 1994 (I think) a few years ago and it had the same thing.........I assumed it had the roof replaced at some point and was riveted in the gutter, then bogged, but seeing yours is the same, perhaps it's something that was "factory" done....

The stuff in the gutters of my 130 wasn't quite flush, but sounds the same.

Mine's not quite flat but pretty full of filler - as as all the others I've seen (and the TD5 I owned from memory).

So I just dig it out a bit if I want to mount any roof bar or similar I guess.

when sealant splits/cracks,or is damaged & you'll probably have to dig it out and replace all with good flexable sealant (sika flex) when it starts to rain inside car-( I don't think what LR used or how applied was up to Aust conditions), don't have to fill gutter with as much when you replace it- keep bead low on roof side (so you cann't see it from ground) and run finger along inside of gutter forming bead on inside edge
positioning rack to outside of channel might be best to avoid joint of roof / gutter & using a sealant on legs if you 'dig it in'

I was recommended to use windscreen drip check sealer until it was pointed out to me that a good quality polyurethane sealer can be removed later on. The trick in application is to wet your finger, rag or other tool with wax and grease remover to get a nice smooth finish ready for painting

Another trick, lay a line of masking tape where you want the edge, put the silicone in / on, and then pulll the tape of, you will be left with a profesional looking straight edge! (I use this method whenever I use silicone,,, eg the bathroom tiles etc)
