Question What size Warn winch for D3

    Hi All,

First time here and have some questions about Warn Winches and my 2010 D3. I am looking at getting a winch in the not too distant future and am not sure what size Warn to get.

The models and dimensions I am looking at are:
    9.5XP L 58cm D 16cm H 19cm
    16.5ti L 63cm D 22cm H 25cm

Can anyone tell me if the 16.5ti will fit in the D3 winch mounting kit and A-frame as I don't want to put on an ARB/TJM front bar.

    Thanks

    Dom

Hi Dom, sorry i can't help with the fitting of a 16.5 winch however if you decide to go with a warn 9.5xp then i may have a few things you may be interested in.
When i bought my car it had a warn 9.5xp winch mounted in the cradle with a genuine landrover nudge bar and landrover spotlights. I put an ARB bar on mine and transferred the winch over. So if you want a cradle to suit the 9.5 and a front bumper with the cutout for the cradle already in it {could be painted to suit your car}it's all going cheap along with the nudge bar and spotlights.
Also i have used the 9.5xp a few times and on the weekend was able to pull a patrol out of a bog that had fully bellied out, hence i'm not sure you would need a winch any bigger than 9.5. However your needs may necessitate it.
    Good luck mate

    Hi Dom,
Most installers have difficulty fitting a 9000lb winch into an ARB bar on D3/4. I can't vouch for the Land Rover cradle, but I imagine it would be similar.

Those large format Warn winches are huge in comparison - not only in dimension, but are around 30Kg heavier if loaded with steel cable. You would want to be using it seriously and often to warrant the fitting of one of these.

Hey Ian, I couldn't agree more in regards to the difficulty fitting the 9000+ winches in the ARB bar. When i had the ARB bar fitted to the D3 i was told the whole job would take about 4-5 hrs. I gave the car to a very well known four wheel drive accessories company, who are "professionals" in this field, to fit the bar at 0830hrs i returned at 1600hrs only to spend the next 2 hrs helping one very cranky fitting "specialist" finish the job in a hurry so he could go home. Only to then spend another 2 hrs the next day replacing the extra under body guards that we didn't have time to do the previous day.
Please note i'm not bagging the company or the fitter, it was just a difficult, time consuming, mongrel of a job.
So Dom that's just another reason why it would be hard to justify an even larger winch. If you need more pulling power better to just carry a sheave and extra dynema rope.

Not sure on the D3 but the D2 is 622mm inside the chassis rails incl any mounts that fit inside the rails. I just measured to make myself a cradle for a Tigerz 12000lb, which is fairly compact. And I believe that a D3 bar will fit a D2.

Anything over a 9500lb for a Discovery is pointless overkill. Even an 8000 will be fine and on the rare occasions you need a difficult pull use a snatch block to about double the pull.

I only have the 12000 lb'r as it was "the right price".

And what I said about bars was assed a bit, D2a will fit D2 despite what they say.
