Steve, sounds like you've got one o' them 'new fangled' computer operated Deefers??
well , each to his own.....mine don't have 'electronic any-thing' and I love it for that....
However, basically sounds to me that the vehicle was a tad 'overloaded' ??
Watching a 4WD Action vid a while back about 'towing' and the suggestion was that you 'stay out of top gear' (when towing).......whether its 5th...in my case...or probably 6th in your case ???
Reason being that 'top gear' in most vehicles is an 'overdrive' gear...designed for 'easy highway cruising'..... and NOT for towing/carrying 'heavy loads'.
with heavy loads, dropping down a gear will also help your fuel economy to a degree and put a lot less strain on the driveline.
Too, HOT weather..........heavy load.......strong headwinds....uphill........just drop down a cog or two..........??? after all you've only got a 2.5 litre donk in there pulling all that weight and it's probably 'stretching the friendship' to ask that much of it ??
"Driver demand error" 'bout says it all !!
ps// your fuel consumption WILL go up when heavily loaded depending on the conditions and terrain
