    K&N filter, good or bad?

Heading north to NT and bought a K&N filter to fit to the d2 v8 as an upgrade to beat the dust (snorkle soon). My old man has since told me they are no good, I always listen to the old man and he's usually on the money. Sooooo... should I put it in or stick to the original???

I was advised the same as your old man is telling you. From what I was told, it's the oil that you need to put on the filter which is the problem.

Isuzurover did some serious testing on filters a couple of years back.
    Air Filter Tests (Finally)

    The K&N's weren't too flash.

    Hi,
a couple of years ago I had Hilux fitted with 2.4 Turbo Diesel (out of a Toyota Surf) and took it Chapmans Autos at Cooroy(Qld) to get it dyno'd and tuned up. I asked Robert the proprietor about using a K&N filter on the motor as he has been successfully racing 4X4's offroad for a number of years in many races including the Finke. His reply was not to bother, just use an OEM filter in the box. Even in his offroad race prepped 4x4's all he uses is OEM filters........

Here is a link for his website...

I have used K&N's for a few years now and never had a problem.

I wash and re-oil new filters before fitting them. By doing this I remove all the from factory oil, and then spray a little fresh oil on the filter.

Here is the trick I have found- "I hold the filter in my hand and spray only enough, that if the filter was not there my hand would have a fine mist covering"

The problem with K&N's is people spray too much oil (incorrectly thinking more oil will catch more dust etc)and the excess is drawn through the filter and of course coats the MAF.

I have run K&N's on the following.

    EA-AU 6cyls & V8's,
    Injected RRC's- '87 3.5 (x2) & '89 3.9
Carbied '85 RRC (Two cone filters - one fitted directly to each carby
    '97 Disco 3.9 V8

I love these anecdotal (testimonial) stories.

Is that like saying "I have been playing Russian Roulette for a few years now and I am still alive so it must be safe"

Followed by a list of 7+ vehicles. Which therefore means you probably haven't owned any of them long enough to notice increased wear and probably don't do oil analysis to have found elevated wear metals or silica.

Add to that, you live on a tiny, wet island, ( ) so the dust loads getting to your filter would be orders of magnitude less than those in most parts of Australia.

Couldn't agree more with you Pedro....Thoroughly nice and down earth people who know their cars.....Robert spent an absolute age on the dyno trying to wring as much HP as he could out of it whilst keeping it within a safe range...Highly recommended....

I used a K&N on my first Disco 300Tdi and after a trip to Broome and Cape Leveque gave it away. Hated washing the damn thing in the caravan park as it stunk the place out and went straight back to the original and kept a spare with me.
At least you can knock most dust out until you can give it a good hoovering.
    Alan.
