    What engine do you have???

If a TD4, the lift pump in the tank (near the tank) can play up. While expensive I do not believe it is any where near as expensive as you have indicated. The main high pressure pump for the common rail is very reliable and is unlikely to be an issue.

If a V6 then I have no idea.

If it is a V6 change the fuel filter. Its located in the tank unit with the pump, you will have to dismantle to get filter out.

yes it is the v6 so it may just be the fuel filter and not the fuel pump dose any one have a diagram on how to pull it all apart

    thanks

My V6 gave some similar symptoms and slowly it came down to the last resort of dropping the tank for a look inside.
The pump was heavily corroded (water) and full of crap including large flakes of rust and sand. The tank needed to be flushed out and the pump and filter replaced as they were RS.

Put it down to a bad batch of fuel I had paid good money for at some point, I suspect from a trip to SA prior.

Replacement pump and filter (new) was something like $1400 from what I recall.

Hopefully just the filter but I would inspect the pump carefully.
