How do I remove rthe bearing from the transfer case?

I have removed the transfer case, and removed most items from it. All that is left is the output shaft. Following the advice in the book, I removed the circlip that holds in the front bearing, tapped the shaft forwards and removed the front outer race. The book now says to tap the shaft rearwards to remove the rear outer race. This pushes the rear outer race rearward until the gear hits the side of the box. The book then says to pull the shaft forward, and insert a spacer constructed from an old outer race (with the circumference ground down to leave a clearance fit and section removed to allow it to slip over the shaft) between the inner race and the outer race. Then proceed to tap the shaft rearward to finish removing the outer race. I do not have a spare scrap outer race. How have other people removed this bearing from their transfer case?

It has been a few years, but I recall I used a section of stainless pipe the right size.

Did you cut a slot into it so that it could slip over the shaft, between the inner and outer races?

use any other bearing of similar size

a series of small nuts stood on edge will also space it out enough.

Hopefully does the trick. Was tempted to do it myself but my mechanical aptitude is dire and will result more than a bearing being removed.

I could not get the nut technique to work, so I turned up a replica of the bearing outer race from aluminium. This worked well.
