    The no mod brigade...

Is it just me, or are they gaining a fervour approaching zealotry???

I seem to notice with increasing frequency, that whenever someone asks about mods (axles, tyres, snorkels, lockers etc...) there seem to be a bunch of people ready to jump in and say "the mod is unnecessary, your landie can take you anywhere you want to go in standard form"

Now while I can see the benefit in:
    (a) keeping a vehicle stock standard until you have seen what it is capable of
    (b) only doing what is absolutely necessary

The "you don't need to mod" crowd are casting broad aspersions about what the owner of the vehicle wants/needs.

Items such as lockers/snorkels/mud tyres may not be 100% necessary on a touring vehicle, but to many they are cheap insurance. When I was in the middle of the canning, a long way from anywhere, and we got 84 mm of rain, I was very glad I had lockers, mud tyres and a winch, and on a few occasions wished I had a snorkel.

I am all for people who wish to keep their vehicles standard, however, it would be nice if they could see with both eyes...

yeah i have also noticed this Ben ,these anti mod folk are in my eyes "forum tourers "they drive there landrover to the caravan park on the bitumen and every now and then might drive on the dirt shoulder .

now these folk are giving people advise on mods that are wanting to do the proper australian touring ,unfortunately this could leave them with some big trouble or very epensive problems, which could have been prevented by a few low cost mods .

I personally dont understand why all 4WDs didn't come out with lockers and a winch from the factory (and thus coming from someone who has hardly ever had lockers and never a winch).
Back in the day more aggressive tread would have been on my list too.

Nowadays, the fourbys are more oversized road cars in the eyes of the creators, so I understand why they don't think about the people that actually wish to use them to their full potential.

Unfotunately as Ben has mentioned, there is a growing number of people who mock the modified scene. I understand this to a point because there are a lot of people with modifications they will never use, or that are purely for show (toyota owners are the worst for this). But you can't direct that opinion to all who choose to mod their vehicle.

I havn't really noticed it much online, but in the real world I see it every now and then.

Sorry. Just poking my nose through the door here and heard this.

To be honest, when I read the thread title I thought you were about to start promoting a new kind of anarchy for AULRO in which there would be no Inc., etc.

But your comments make much more sense.

As I started reading and came across words like "zealotry" and a wish that people were not so one eyed, I thought for a moment, I was still reading the "Does God Exist?" thread.

I guess we all interpret what we read through the filter of our own beliefs and prejudices. Without taking the trouble to look back over a number of posts on the subject to provide evidence, I would have argued that there may be a few "You must modify your vehicle" posts and a few " You must not modify your vehicle" posts, but that the overwhelming majority are more like " You might consider these mods" and "Are you sure you need those mods?".

I hadn't formed the impression that there were two warring camps; unlike the PC v Mac, believers v atheists, Labor v Lib v Greens camps.

I think what appears as "zealotry" is often nothing more than a consequence of most posts being brief and therefore appearing blunt, tactless or even aggressive. That is an occupational hazard of posting on forums; that the tone of your post will frequently be incorrectly interpreted.

All I had ever noticed were a few posts that appeared to me to be from people who were concerned that some newcomer may have been misled into thinking that her Land Rover will be useless unless she spends thousands of dollars on mods that she has heard about or seen in glossy magazines.

So the answer is that I believe you are misreading the situation. There is no war. I could probably start one though if you want to extend the life of this thread.

Let me guess; all the members who thanked the OP have modified vehicles. Am I right?

You should probably thank that post too... Not sure if you have noticed, but some one seems to have bolted a house on the back of your Defender!

Surely you cant need that After all, apparently, standard is best
