It is internal to the engine. You can't bypass it. back when I did mine it was $1100 to replace the whole housing as you couldn't get just one bit.
Hello all,
I have a 2000 TD5, had oil present in the coolant system, and was informed it was a head issue.
Have replaced head (Not cheap) e fitted, and after a 50km trip i have same problem - Oil in coolant system and no oil in sump (1/4 left).
Have found after done research that the Oil cooler dies in the TD5, can i isolate and if so what may/would it affect??????
Thanks

Thanks George130,
All 4x4 in Kotara can supply one for $500 and a Genuine for $650, plus a full hose kit for $250, so more money for the defender, and at least i have a new head on anyway, so hopefully all problems gone then.
Cheers

George130,
About 14 months ago I had an issue with 'an oily gunge'
Initial diagnosis was the leaking oil cooler matrix (yup, an expensive exercise as I bought all the parts), but sent the truck through a radiator specialist for a full on flush and blow out!!!
Since refilled with decent coolant, there has not been an issue since. It was probably that crappy coolant/water went in the system instead.
Hope this helps....justinc was a godsend...as usual!
Plus I was able to return all the spares!
