Why companies will not ship to OZ

You ever wonder why companies dont want to ship to you in Australia?

I work for Lucky8 a USA Land Rover Off Road store and we have been sending parts to you guys in Australia for years with out an issue.
An Australian customer purchased a snorkel and we sent him an email stating the shipping was going to be $150 extra and asked if he wanted cancel the order.
This is the Email we received this morning.

    Hey Justin,

You must honour the agreement that was made when I completed the purchase from your website. It's illegal to increase the costs at this stage of the transaction. If your organisation made a mistake, the mistake is yours.

I hope that this transaction will be pleasant from now on. It is not my intention to make it ugly. However, you must know that if you do not honour the agreed quote for the unit price and shipping and handling fees, that I will receive legal advice, and contact PayPal, 4WD forums, etc about this matter and your handling of it, until justice is served.

    Sincerely,
    XXXXXXX

I did not know what to say to this, and just refunded his money.

Have funds been transferred and accepted for the originally quoted price?

If not I believe (through minimal internet research and no actual legal knowledge) it just an 'invitation to treat' so you can tell him to FO.

However, if funds have been accepted (for example) by an online purchasing system you may be liable to supply. I think the acceptance of funds is the point at which the contract is formed.

i'm assuming the purchase was made due to considerable saving to buying the same product here in OZ

The site doesn't appear to calculate shipping to here automatically - you put the goods through the cart, checkout via paypal and then like paddocks and most other OS suppliers they email the final shipping price. At least this has been my experience. Pretty simple and efficient.

BTW the AULRO witness protection system was rather quick. Had dinner with a bloke from Sydney last night and you should've seen the performance over a closed mussel.

It was not an Over site. He ordered it when we were closed over the internet. No emails no phone calls. Just ordered it. When we sent the email saying hey this is a big box and is expensive to ship would you like to pay for shipping or cancel the order we got that email with all the threats.

We are a US company that dose not offer shipping to anywhere out side the US on our site.

The client says "when I completed the transaction from your website". This implies he had already paid the issued invoice - is that correct?
A little later you say "we refunded his money" again implying he had already paid.
Did the transaction state or imply that the $ were for a delivered item?

I work for a company that issues quotes to a clients. If a client accepts a quote then we stick to it even if something that we hadnt counted on occurs and if that was clearly in scope.
If the unforseen issue is clearly out of scope ie not specifically included in the job to be done then we feel comfortable asking the client for more $ for that item.
If the invoice $ included delivery and if the client had already paid then you have an ethical obligation to stand by the price you quoted him - this would be a no-brainer.

Edit: Have just read other responses you have made. If your site clearly states that the price included US delivery then you are clear - you should have said to him "Sure, we'll stick to that price. What mainland US address would you like that sent to sir?"

I just tried your site out and it does give the impression that shipping is already calculated and then it transfers you to Paypal.

However, its pretty obvious that the shipping amount is too cheap for shipping a big item to Australia.

Maybe the site should be enhanced to ask for a shipping address before it tries to calculate the shipping or complete the checkout process.
