    4X4 shockers

    HI all
I am getting a rear set of shocks installed on my Defender ! Opposite Lock are installing them , they say its a hard job and it is not as straight forward as it looks , to me it looks like 2 bolts each side to undo the shocker .They are charging me 1 hour labor its about 80-90 dollars .
Is this true its involved ???

need advice before getting ripped !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Well the rears are much easier than the fronts (because they are outside the coils).

One hour doesn't seem excessive.... after all they have to take off the old ones as well and at their risk (and who knows how easy or hard that will be).

If that is their quote and it's firm then take it. Otherwise have a go yourself and save $.

Having recently changed the springs and shocks on my wife's 90, if someone had offered to do it for me for $80-90 I would have bitten their hand off. As one_oita said the rears are dead easy. But the fronts can be a nigyhtmare, especially if (as I found) you can't get the bottom nut undone.

I agree with one_iota. You can spend 5 to 10 minutes just getting the vehicle into the workshop and up on a hoist. 60 minutes seems pretty reasonable to me.

If you own a socket set or spanners or even a shifter you can do it yourself. Dont waste that 80 bucks, thats a snatch strap or some other bit of gear you need...

Changing rear shocks should take 10 - 15 minutes... I have done it plenty of times, no need to lift the vehicle, remove wheels, anything hard at all.

Do it yourself. I did springs and shocks all 'round on a D2 recently in an hour (with the owner helping me), on a gravel driveway. Defender shocks are easier and there's more room to work. If it's really difficult (to get the old ones off) it may take you an hour, but I suspect you'll have the job done in under half an hour. By the time you take the car, they do the job, and you pick up the car, plus work to earn the $90 (post Tax), it's probably cost you a day of your life all up for a 20min job.

Changing rear shocks is fairly easy...the only issue is if the bottom nut - if it's frozen you may have to cut it off with a grinder (not hard really). If it's straight on and off I'd say 30 min max!
