Best way to remove vinyl from around battery/ seat box areas

The vinyl stuff under the seats and on the side is all tatty and buggered in my 96 defender ute. Is this standard factory trim for them or is it an addition from a previous owner?
I am thinking of taking it all off and going back to the painted metal for the under the seats area for now and maybe re-doing it at a later date.
What is the best way to get rid of the trim? I haven't started pulling it off yet - it doesn't look very nice, sort of like carpet underlay with vinyl on top.

I am looking for advice from someone who has successfully done this

    I haven't done it yet.
It is lowish on my list of things and I need something to replace it with.
I am tempted to carpet over the top of it but might hold off for now.
You only notice it if you look at it....so I've chosen not to look for now

It's glued on. I use a steel scraper and it came off easily enough.

Word of warning though - whilst it isn't much it does serve a purpose. The amount of heat and noise transferred is bad at the best of times - removing that will make it worse. Personally have something ready to take it's place when you remove it.

    Cheers
