New Pinion Bearing needed... Should I put a locker in at the same time????

    Guys,
Ive been considering a rear locker for sometime but never got the wallet out because there was nothing wrong with the current diff (apart from it didnt lock!!)

Over the last 500km the pinion bearing has started howling at me so I need to get in there and fix that before it take the casing and other bits with it.

Question then is: Whilst someone is in there replacing the bearings and oil seals, should I put in a locker at the same time?

It strikes me that because its a labour intensive thing to do (replacing the bearing) it would make sense to put the locker in now?????

If so, next question: Which locker?
My first thought was ARB (RD138), but then I stumbled onto the Ashcroft site and see there new lockers - Competitive in cost and no doubt good on quality. Has anyone here got one or can comment?

    Thx
    Jon
    Regards,
    Jon

Hi Jon, You have a Sals rear? If so, are you certain that the pinion isn't just loose??? They have a crushable spacer, and IF the locking nut comes loose they can float and become noisy. SOMETIMES, if you get to it early, replcing the crush spacer and locknut can stave off total replacement, they are pretty robust

Have you considered a Detroit? In a sals it is less than an hour to fit, drive in drive out Simple, reliable, and with Maxi axles etc quite strong enough IME I run 33"s but must admit don't hang off rock ledges etc with it

    Thanks guys.

Ive got a Rover (P38) rear axle, not Sailsbury so labour is a bit of a killer compared to the cost of the bearings and oil seals.

Anyone with knowledge of the Ashcroft locker?

while it was out Id be dropping the detroit into it and adding the maxis, its the simplest way to go and IMHO unless you specifically want an actual lock up locker does plenty for keeping you moving especially once you get the hand of driving it through the brakes.

    Hi Jon,
The Ashcroft locker hasn't been around very long, if any were ordered at time of release they'd be arriving in the mail about now so nobody will have much experience with them apart from Ashcrofts themselves

I'm waiting on a reply from Ashcrofts to order 3 of their lockers for immediate fitting, so hopefully that'll get the feedback coming

604 GBP express delivered to Sydney.

Spoke to Dave Ashcroft tonight, very helpful. With regard to spares and availability he is making a point of keeping all spares on the shelf so that he can sort any unforeseen problems quickly, not that he's expecting any, the units have undergone extensive testing over the last 6 months.

    Im seriously tempted...
