parking sensors

I have just had Opposite Lock here in Brisbane put the rear wheel carrier on and I now have no parking sensors...they worked on it till 8pm tonite and in the end I had had enough and said I will take it in to an agent to put it on the analyser in case the parking module has thrown a tantrum.

Has anyone else put the OL rear carrier on and had issues with their sensors...I was aware I would lose one but the guys have followed instructions and joined the wire from the missing sensor to the circuit but nothing happens...it was working before I went in and the fuse seems fine..in fact we replaced it anyway.

Any hints would be appreciated

Hi Graeme,

I take it you are talking about the Dolium wheel carrier. OL are one of their agents. I have the Dolium SWC ( single wheel carrier ) installed and Mitchell Bros hitch. Both interfere to a degree with the reversing sensors. The SWC the most. If you do a search you will find posts on disarming sensors in the bumper. Getting to them is difficult with the bumper on, and I didn't bother. It is also pretty much a chore to angle the sensors, reinstall, and then go back again, and again if they are not working correctly. Not sure what has been done to your system.

My sensors are all active, but I have disarmed the two closest to the centre, which seem to be the problem sensors for the tow hitch and the SWC. I have used rubber stick on pads ( you can get them at Bunnings ) to blank out the offending sensors. It seems that if the sensor is totally blanked with an opaque material like this rubber, it takes it out of the circuit. ( I tried self adhesive stickers, and they did not work )

If all else fails, as an option, see if you can get the system restored back to original.

If you can get your system back working, try some pads. Trial and error with an assistant walking up to the rear of the vehicle. Note, I tried half blanking sensors and gave up. Having the sensors totally blanked does reduce my coverage at the rear, and I accept that eventually I will install a camera for peace of mind and better coverage.

I have got 10c coins painted black held on by velcro on my two centre sensors bit later I will turn then so they work.

I believe the centre sensors have a range about 5 feet but the two outers only have half that range so with the centres blocked you get very close to an object before they go off as a consequence I do not rely on them any more.

Thanks guys...I just picked up our rooftent from Hannibal who repaired it after it was trashed by someone with a forklift between Tauranga NZ and Sydney!

Peter had a reversing camera which,if I don't get any sense from a LR agent, will be my next investment as it seemed to solve all his problems on his vehicle as well...it is also handy when hooking up a trailer apparently.

Admiral..can you give me some more info on your stick on rubber pads...are they clear ..what are they originally designed for?..when I find a Bunnings I will have a look...but I guess it will probably be Cairns before I find a LR agent and a Bunnings.

ps fyi info I have just worked out my mileage ..I'm doing 8.3km/lt giving me at hiway speed a range of 1500km

I used self adhesive floor protectors. The size was perfect and colour coded (black). I cut them in half because I just wanted to shield the tow hitch. Works a treat. This thread refers.

Hi Graeme, Shining has it correct. I think they are black stick on rubber furniture protectors. If you check out this section in Bunnings, they are on a sheet of 6 or so and are about the size of a 10 cent piece.

I have the single wheel carrier from OL and have had no problems with the reverse sensors (fitted by the guys in Bunbury). But I am grateful for the tip on the "stick on buttons" from Admiral which may resolve the annoying issue of the noise in the cab when I have my camper trailer attached and reversing into position.

If you have reversing beeps with your trailer connected then there is an issue. Do you have the genuine wiring harness for the trailer wiring as this does switch off reversing sensors. If you have a electrician installed connection or a home made one that has broken into the rear wiring of the car then the sensors are not turned off.

If you have the genuine harness and the beepers are still there then you may have to visit a dealer to get the system fully switched on which kills the beepers when a trailer is attached.

Thanks for this. I have spoken with LR today and they think there is a problem as I am using the OEM wiring harness they supplied. I had wondered, when the OL guys fitted my rear wheel carrier, they had to remove one sensor where the bolt mechanism sits against the bar.....maybe they have caused the issue?!

I first tried those rubber furniture protectors but the parking sensors still worked through them. It was then that I switched to 10c pieces held on with velcro dots. The metal stops the signal from the sensors.
